Car - Jack Stand points

I always just put my axel stands just behind the jacking point, have always done that. Is that wrong then???

Also get a trolley jack, don't use that scissor jack unless it's an emergency or something.

I must have spent at least 3 hours trying to get one of them to budge. Two hammer method, tap with a centre punch, bit of heat - nothing.
I have also bought plusgas spray and adminstered in advance on (anticipated seized) exhaust bolts ... but 'heats' good too.
I did not have a good enough quality allen drive for the calliper ... chinese .. so the risk you will irrevocably mess up the head

edit:
Is that wrong then???
don't know either ... if unbolting stuff on sprung suspension parts, feels as though you might rock it off ? versus axel stand nearer wheel hub .

use copper grease when you reinstall them, will make it easier to remove next time, don't use too much as you are dealing with brakes.

Ordered some replacements, so I will cover them in copper grease before re installing.
Bought a trolly jack from Halfords too - at £30 it was a no brainier considering the use I will get out of it.
The rubber fitting also arrived for the axle stands (eBay job)
The t30 I used for the bolts was a brand new one for my ratchet. Couldn’t have been any better prepared.
I’ll post back one the job is done, and I will also post pics of the axle stand locations for those interested.
You guys all pretty much confirmed the sub frame as a good location. After having the stands on already, I wouldn’t put them anywhere else.
The scissor jack notches on the sill are for just that - the jack. I have seen axle stands placed there but I wasn’t 100% happy with the idea. im sure it’s fine though!

I have had to admit defeat - the caliper carrier bolts are also seized on both wheels. Local Garage going to do the job in a couple of weeks

All I could do was clean the brakes, remove/regrease the glide pins (with Ceratec) and put everything back together - I didn't want to risk snapping the carrier bolts and rendering the car un driveable.
Annoying, as once they are off the fun part begins!

Is there a place I can buy new carrier bolts? Harder than I thought to locate them online - or should I just leave it up to the garage?

Local dealer is best bet. They normally come with some threadlocker on from factory. Needs heat to break down the threadlocker and then should come free.

The scissor one that came with the car is fine for me

They're not designed for frequent use. Get a proper jack (even a cheap nasty Halfords job will be infinitely better) if you're going to be working on your car in the future.

They'll also have an impact wrench that'll wobble the bolt free, rather than just sheering the end off that a normal wrench would do.

Right - Vauxhall just quoted me £100 + VAT for the 4 carrier bolts....4 BOLTS AND NOTHING ELSE

Strange that ford's bolts cost a couple of quid each:

Will see what my local garage says (reputable private garage) booked in for the 21st

EDIT: Found some here:

that is the trouble with some main dealers they charge massive amounts of money, glad you found some cheaper, best to have them and ask the garage to fit new when rebuilding. I'm sure they will use a little heat and an impact wrench and the bolts will be out in seconds

Yeah, they offered to fit the brakes when it was in getting the exhaust done last week. Wish I just let them fire on!
Still, at least I have some new bolts for them now. Happier than re using the old ones

do the pad+disk need doing immediately , if not I would be trying plusgas over a period of time, could be expensive in a garage.
a quick google shows, if they are corroded garage might have problems too ... needing to redo threads or even replace callipers ..
garages are not always working in your favour for economic solutions.

Sooner rather than later, yes.

They are a decent bunch, and have done plenty work on this car in the past (they removed the rusted on disc retaining bolts for nothing)
If the car does indeed need new calipers/carriers - then I guess they will need to be fitted :)

Replaced by the garage last Tuesday - no issues encountered.
They fitted all of the new bolts I provided as well and charged me £50 for the whole job

I had the car jacked up with the wheels off over the weekend so I could clean the brakes/arches etc and it all looks spot on.

Next job is to paint the calipers etc to try and prevent any further corrosion so I will get that done before winter sets in
