Using the word Gatekeeping?

Not seen it constantly used - though I don't tend to visit Reddit - I've encountered it occasionally used by certain corporate types over the years in business.

EDIT: Looks like it is mostly a Reddit thing going back a couple of years or more.

I feel so wonderfully out of touch. Outside from the obvious meaning of gatekeeping; what does it mean and is it being used responsibly?

I believe in the context of say Reddit it would be for example like me, as someone who lives in Somerset, having a hissy fit because someone who has never even visited Somerset has an opinion about it as a county.

Hahaha, only Reddit could come up with something so pathetic.

But then this is the community that flooded every other bloody site with their fedora crap.

It's usually used to describe how some people/organisations stop others from joining/doing well.

For example in much the same way as a doorman at a club might stop you entering if you don't meet the dress code, it can also be applied to things like the people who choose what authors/stories to publish (although normally they're more interested in "Is it good enough" than anything else*).

You also see people trying to act as self imposed gatekeepers to certain activities (for example "you're a girl, you can't really be a X fan"), and often see it used as an excuse as to why some people don't do well.

*Something some people can't grasp, that they're not being published by the big names because their writing isn't good enough as opposed to some conspiracy about X group trying to keep Y group out. Although there are instances where the complaint is legitimate.

Mental. I love Somerset.

I am continually bemused how such thought processes, and the reactions to exist. How has this happened? Who allowed it?

never heard the term used wasn't there a game called that ? or maybe i'm thinking of dungeon keeper

We have a gatekeeper at work. Their job is to make sure standards and approvals are adhered to, and basically make sure developers don't ship crap into our production systems. A necessary evil as far as we're concerned.

When you see those pictures about how "only real men/women/insert demographic" then some nonsense claim afterwards. That's an example of gatekeeping.

Kinda related to this topic (but not to create a new one) - what's up with the word "gammon" lately? I see it mostly on BBC have your say comments section. I think they're using it as a derogatory term as opposed to something that is edible?

On topic - gatekeeper reminds me of something I would have read from the Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson "Fighting Fantasy" series of role-play books.

I'll be sure to point our gatekeeper at this definition. He's a miserable curmudgeon already, this might just tip him over the edge and go postal!
