Upgrade now or wait?

My iPhone SE 64GB has served me well and am due for an upgrade. Am seeing the iPhone 8 (64) go for £38 per month with £100 upfront. Is it worth upgrading now or should I hold off? What should have saving would I expect (if any) when the new phones are released?

Are we expecting to see 5g in the new ones in September? I heard Apple were keen to get iPhones with 5g out early 2019 but if they only do once a year updates then it has to be September or another phone released early next year. I’m wanting to upgrade but I remember the days when 4G came out and 3G speeds plummeted. I don’t upgrade often so I will hold out for a 5G phone. Currently on an IPhone 6!

Do you know of any networks that have 5G capability implemented yet?

I don't think 5G exists yet.

I'd also be reasonably sure 3G, if anything, probably got a little quicker as phones moved off 3G onto 4G. Have you any links showing why it slowed down? If it's correct, I'd be interested to know why.

2019 it is coming out in the UK.

I could be wrong but I distinctly remember 3G being pretty bad after 4g came out. Possibly bandwidth taken away by the providers to support 4g.

Aside from this Apple have stated they want to be the first (or more likely one of the first) to have a 5g ready phone. We know some manufacturers are bringing them out at the start of 2019 (possibly the Moto Z3 with 5g mod could be the first) then Apple won’t be waiting to September 2019.

The phone coming out next month will not have 5g we can be sure of that.
That’s what I am thinking which suggests that there will be a new one next year but before September if Apple are going to the first or one of the first.

I doubt they will be 'the first'. Even to be 'one of the first' will be fine if they release in September. 5G wont be a thing in the UK until at least mid next year, if not longer, so September should be fine to be 'one of the first'.

After all the insane hype last year there's very little buzz about what's going to be released this time around. Perhaps everyone now believes that the development and innovation cycle is taking longer than 12 months.

I thought that the standard hadn't even been finalised for 5G yet and weren't going to be until early 2019. I read an article (somewhere) stating that even early adopters probably wouldn't be about until 2020 with mainstream take up starting 2022 with a view to "full" usage by 2025, I may have dreamed that though but I have been reading a lot about 5G through work recently.

They have shifted all the Freeview bandwidth to open up for the 5g frequencies. BT have said they will have 5g out by the end of 2019 https://www.forbes.com/sites/annato...5g-launch-in-the-uk-and-why-is-this-exciting/ the other providers will no doubt be around the same time as well.

I expect the roll out to be very slow at the start and then pop up everywhere very quickly afterwards. A bit like 4G was.

To be honest I am not that excited about 5G yet, I consistently get 20mb+ on 4G. 5G isn't suddenly going to get me (nor 95% of the population) speeds to do anything I can't already do on my phone. No one needs to stream 4K Netflix on their 5" screen.

Bandwidth is still going to be really expensive on the initial roll out to recoup the investment and latency is still going to be a barrier to replacing fixed line internet.

Agreed. I'm fairly sure you could stream 4K on a 4G connection anyway. I think I usually get around 80mbs... surely that can cope with 4K streaming. The bigger factor might be your bandwidth limit.

I would much rather 4G 'not spots' got filled in than we got ridiculously fast 5G in cities where there is already great coverage anyway!
