Seagate 8tb usb is about £150 about £100 cheaper than wd red.

That's a massive can of worms right there! My personal experience - I've had 3 Seagates fail on me, and 0 from all other manufactures

I currently use multiple Seagate Ironwolf 8TB drives i my NAS but not had them long enough to comment on reliability yet. However they aren't cool or quiet, especially compared to my old WD Reds. I'd actually recommend the WD Reds over the Ironwolf if the additional cost for equivalent capacity isn't an issue.

Be aware that portable drives are more prone to failure, due to the nature of them being portable and taking knocks etc. 8TB is a lot of data to lose. If you plan to fill it, buy two of them, one as a backup.
