Hi. Me and the family ( incl 2 young children) are of to North Yorkshire, Ampleforth for a weeks holiday. Leaving from Derbyshire.

Curious about a suitable coastal place to visit on the way there.

Wondered if anyone on here would recommend anywhere.

Many thanks

Robin hood's bay is pretty, ravenscar is remote but has an interesting history but ultimately there's more to do at Whitby and Scarborough.

Coast road from Saltburn is the way to go if you're starting from that side. Saltburn is worth a look around as well but again lacks the variety of the main tourist spots. I also really like the south gare at Redcar, it's pure industrial landscape overlooking teessides industrial sprawl was Ridley Scott's inspiration for blade runner. Not for the faint hearted though.

To be honest you could get Robin Hoods bay, Whitby and Scarborough in, in one day. Personally for me it's always Whitby though, spent lots of Saturdays there in my teens / early 20's when growing up. Love the abbey and visitors centre. Oh and lucky ducks.

As above really. Whitby/Scarborough are probably the most popular. Scarborough is like the NE Blackpool, Whitby is smaller and has more history.

Not sure how old the children are but Staithes is the location of the BBC programme 'Old Jack's Boat'

Salturn is nice but theres not much to do, Victorian pier and cliff lifts. The Chippy and beach is nice though.

If you venture to the South Gare (not something I'd visit) you will have a nice view of the mouth of the Tees, old steel works, a nuclear power station and the windfarm at Redcar. If you do a lemon top from pacittos on Redcar sea front is a must.

The beach between Redcar and Saltburn is nice at the Stray (Marske). There's a cafe and free parking along that stretch.

Not sure how far south you want to travel but Flambrough Rocks are lovely and you'll see Puffins.

Theres loads of nice places to visit on the moors loads of nice little villiages. Goathland is where the TV programme Hartbeat was set. Dont forget the NYM railway which runs steam trains between pickering and Whitby.

Theres a nice old pu at Blakey Ridge called the Lion Inn, not to far from Danby which is popular with walkers doing the Cleveland Way.

If you fancy a bit of exercise there are some nice walks at Roseburry Topping/Captain Cooks Monument

Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay as has been said. Both lovely places.

There's also Staithes, again looks a great wee place. Not been there but me and the lass plan too in the near future.

My god lemon tops. I went to Cleveland college in Redcar in the early 90's they were a summer essential as I watched a crazy mate feed a slotty on the front.

Stokesley boy so all your suggestions are fondly remembered. To the OP if you get the chance get to Suggits ice-cream in great ayton (teacake town) for the best ice-cream in the land.

Scarborough is a dump, it's like Blackpool or Rhyl. We went there once for a day out while staying in York, the castle was really interesting and worth a visit but the rest of the place was pretty terrible, i've heard much better things about Whitby though.
