Fun, reliable, kind of cheap, can I pick all three?

Hi all,

I'm not usually one to ask for this type of advice but I am a bit stuck on a car choice currently, I'm trying to keep it brief while still giving a bit of back story...

I sold my heavily modded Golf R 3 months ago (and have been carless since) as it just wasn't worth the running costs and having my money tied up in it when I do only 3-4k miles a year. Before that I ran an EP3 Civic for 4 years and it was perfect as it cost me barely anything to buy/run and was reliable while still being fun.

Now the problem, I'm trying to find something that is fairly fun or at least not totally boring, semi reliable and up to around £6-7k as I don't want to put in a huge chunk of money or take out a finance or lease deal currently.

Other than it being petrol and not an estate I don't have too many requirements. Already considered another EP3 but paying £3-4000 after selling mine to a mate for £1300 would be stupid. Never liked FN2's.

Can anyone offer up any suggestions? It doesn't have to be a hatchback or considered sporty or fast, just any cars that are reliable, semi fun and not a Fiesta or Focus?

Cheers

MX5+G19 Turbo Kit?
E36 Compact 325/328
Is200+Supercharger or Turbo
Civic EG6 or EK4 with B16/18 or K20 swap

Can you get DC2’s worth having at this price?

The S2000 at this price might be a bit rough round the edges but with a good service history it should be reliable.
There's a few UKDM's under his budget, but they're fugly... can't see many JDM DC2's tho.

Find a Clio 182 Trophy for 6-8k with not too high miles, incredible fun and will lose hardly no money.

Why is the Fiesta ST off your list? Mk7 ST with a Mountune upgrade on a private sale for 7.5k-8k sounds ideal. Really fun car, quick, will be fairly new at least a 2013/14 and will hold its value.

Wtf when did they get so expensive? I get they were good cars but that kind of money on an old Clio sounds ridiculous!

Fiesta ST holding value? LMAO I can't think of a more common car, well there's the Corsa. But they're equally chavy... :p

You obviously don’t know what your talking about then. I’ve been keeping an eye on the mk7 Fiesta ST over the last year once they have gone past the first few years of standard depreciation they hold there value! Especially since nobody wants the new 3cyl ST.
Chavvy? don’t you drive a clapped out 20yr old 1.6 Honda Civic? The ep3 is one of the chavviest cars around always driven by kids with fart cannon exhausts on.

If you can find a nice one for the budget a DC2 would be my FWD choice. I prefer the UKDM look anyway.

RWD and an occasional car, MX5 for me, I love my MKII, back end out action without terrifying and license losing speed. And it's convertible, which after years of me asking why anyone would buy one in the UK, I wouldn't be without one now, when it's a great day for driving in an MX5, it's a really great day.

Did I hit the soft spot? :D

12 year old completely stock EP2, 1 previous owner with FSH, just ticked 60k yesterday. ;)

Thanks for the replies so far guys...I wouldn't say I am bored of Civic Type R's just more that I sold mine for a pittance and it would feel crazy to go and spend 2-3 times that amount on one almost identical.

This suggestion gets me going...the Mrs would despise it though. I'll do some Googling :p

Yeah I thought this suggestion might come up and I've seen your thread about the 172 Cup, I will have a look into them.

When I said no Fiesta / Focus I meant the standard boring variants to be fair, I will do a bit of reseach on the Mk7 ST's. A colleague had a Mk6 ST for quite a few years and I was always fond of that.
