Face ID

Face ID is definitely here to stay, and just like with Touch ID, it will only get more reliable and faster.

Could I please ask how people are finding this? It was one of the reasons why I didn't go for the iPhone X as I thought it being new technology it may not perform very well.

Also when it comes to buying stuff through Apple Store or using Apple Pay does it just take a scan of your face or do you have to enter some sort of confirmation? Daft question but I don't want to accidentally buy stuff :D

You just double press the side button to confirm your intention to purchase, it scans your face and completes the transaction.

I think for me the only time I found Face ID to be a nuisance is when wearing sunglasses. So with Touch ID gloves were a pain in winter, with Face ID sunglasses are a pain in the summer.

With TouchID you can add multiple fingerprints, can you add multiple faces with FaceID? One with sunglasses and one without?

One face only which is another point against Face ID as with Touch ID you can technically add someone else (say a partner) with one of the 5 fingerprints.

Face ID does automatically detect if you've got a hat, put on/taken off glasses. Its just that some sunglasses it can't scan through which also happen to be a pair I own (Ray Ban Wayfarers for those curious).

I've not had any issues with FaceID when wearing glasses or sunglasses.

The next step will be to somehow integrate FaceID into the screen itself so that the notch is done away with. I've just been reading that the Android phone makers are doing fingerprint through the screen so I expect Apple will try to beat them with FaceID in the screen.

Not all glasses are made the same and there are certain degrees of polarisation and in which orientation they are polarised.

I am just relaying what was said when It was released.

I understand, I was just sharing my experience. :)

Getting rid of the notch completely would be seriously challenging and needs a huge breakthrough in technology/miniaturisation.

Those in screen fingerprint readers work using an optical sensor peeping between the gaps in the pixels. The reviews show they aren’t great and rear/side standard sensors are far better.

To do that with the tech involved in Face ID would just be next level. I can see a smaller notch in the near future though.

The supposed leaks of the one plus 6T show a tiny teardrop shaped notch just containing the front facing camera sensor. Definitely a step in the right direction if we must endure notches due to phone manufacturers insisting we all want bezel free smartphones...

Why wouldn't you want a bezel free smart phone? The notch is temporary until they figure out how to do away with it. I don't get the fuss.

It’s not about not wanting a bezel free smartphone but it’s pretty clear Apple isn’t returning to fingerprint readers any time soon. They are stubborn as.... even more so when they are wrong.

You would be unrealistic to expect a completely bezel free iPhone for a long long time. There is no real solution for a front facing camera, those pop out solutions are janky as....

I tend to think of the screen intruding up into the corners v.s. a notch dropping down. It's a minor issue for me but it'd be nice if the UI used them more appropriately e.g. not cutting into web-pages etc.
