in general are the "upgraded" cards worth it?

I am hovering between The below cards, the bottom one is an extra £21 quid or so. I was considering the MSI gaming X... then i saw the dimensions of that monster...... it wont fit in my PC :o

I know we do not know for sure (unless there is a benchmark i missed of either card) so just after general thoughts from past generations from gigabyte, perhaps @GIGA-Man can give some insight please? thanks

Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB WINDFORCE OC
and
Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB GAMING OC

Simple answer No

The biggest Nvidia fan and reviewer, Jay2Cents, said also "Do not buy" on his reviews.

That i believe is sufficient.

I think he's asking whether it's worth paying more for a "better" 2080ti, not whether the 2080ti is worth it.

thanks... yeah i am buying something... it is just which. do we know if the chips are binned differently or is it just the look (edit.. wow pre coffee that would be luck!) of the draw? if it is the latter then i may as well go for the cheapest.

Even the founders edition seems to stay cool and quiet according to the reviews and overclocks well. The 1080ti's from founders to best binned all OC'ed within 200 mhz which in terms of FPS is next to no difference. I think the founders 2080ti looks nice

Normally on the lower power cards like the 1060 the cooler doesn't make much difference because they don't need much cooling.

But with high power cards like vega 64, 1080ti, 2080ti these things are going to need a good cooler to get the most out of them and run quietly.

I would check for reviews on the card you get because you don't want to be stuck with something that is going to overheat and sound like a jet engine.

yeah i would like to see reviews myself but i cant find any of the gigabyte 2080ti. iguess they will come, just need to be patient. i am just a bit sore that i missed the £1050 "deals" and dont want the to go up more.

Yeah I would just be patient and wait for proper reviews on the models your looking at. You just never know how well the cooler is going to run until it's been tested properly.

I'm sure prices will come back down soon enough as well, even if you have to wait a few weeks.

Personally if I was you I would avoid the founders edition.

Also are you sure you can't get the longer cards in your pc? Personally in the past I have just cut out some hard drive bays to make room for graphics card. Or it could be good excuse to buy a bigger case.

Hi

thanks everyone for your thoughts.... just to reiterate.. both the cards i was looking at are 3rd party, its just one is a little more overclocked than the other . i love the look of the founders card however i think their cooling is hampered a bit by them trying to be so compact. width wise i am not limited at all in my case, it is length that is my issue (i am sure there is a pun in there somewhere ;) )

i like my current case and not planning on changing... it has an msi gaming 980 in there now and this is 280mm long.... my case can probalby fit in a 290mm card but that is the absolute limit

sadly the msi gaming 2080ti is 327mm long .... oh and the minor issue of 2x8pin and 1x6pin power connectors. that one is absolutely out. even the duke is 314mm!.

the reason why i am looking at the gigabyte one is it is currently the cheapest according to pricespy.

i was more wondering if gigabyte bin their chips any differently on different cards.

I would wait for the review of the cards I am looking at first.

Silly little things would do my head in like hot VRM's etc.

I would not tell people what to do with their money but when the well known pro Nvidia Youtubers are telling people to wait or not buy, that's a big deal to me.

I would either wait for DLSS benchmarks or buy a 1080Ti until 7nm cards come out next year because a year isn't long at all.

Resale value could tank on these when 7nm cards arrive as well.

If you need an upgrade then I would rather spend the extra on a 2080 than buy a 1080ti/1080 for example. But that's if you are not bothered by being budget conscious.

Budget conscious gamers should maybe* still buy the 1000 series.

But if you already have a 1080ti/1080/1070ti then right now I don't think it's a good idea to buy the new cards.

This is a wait and see job. The new Oct update from Microsoft will bring RT to Windows. We need to see how many games come out with support for DLSS and RT. How this is implemented and what performance is like.

This could take about a year if not more really.

By which point we could see a refresh/new cards in 2019.

---

I would say tho that the one aspect that makes the cards make sense is if you are going to game at 4k.

Where would that leave 10 series cards if you still had one? I reckon I can count on at least effectively £300 off the 2080ti when I sell my 1080ti in October.
It is certain my 2080ti (if working) will be more valuable than a 1080ti when I come to sell it.

Nah, they won't be doing that. It would be extremely time consuming (and probably quite difficult) to test the performance of each chip before deciding what card to put it on.
