Driving pet hates...

Other driver's ire as I try to get the maximum MPG from my car by never travelling above 56.7 mph.

It seems to bug people, petrol is dear you know, why waste it going fast ?

Can't you at least do 60 so you're not forcing trucks to overtake you at 1MPH faster than you're going? You'll not use much more petrol at 60 and it makes traffic flow so much better. Anyone travelling slower than a HGV on a 70MPH motorway should get an immediate 3 points IMO.

Except for the fact that when the gantrys state 50mph HGVs in my experience rarely bother slowing down because of their small-minded "I must do 56.000001mph at all times" mentality

Or because the speed they're doing is probably closer to 50 vs what a car speedometer is reading.

I would suggest you find a friend who drives HGVs and spend an evening with in the cab with them.

People on their phones.

In cars you really only see the extent if you're paying attention of the speed of the vehicle or notice them veering around from behind but it's surprising how much you notice on a bike. I particularly like filtering through traffic and looking through the driver's window at the guilty party as they sit there with the "I've been caught" face..... I must pass 3 or 4 on every commute.

The worst offenders are van drivers and women in 4x4s sat in near-stationary traffic, texting. Waiting at lights also tends to be a hot spot for it but the most dangerous; people glancing down at their handset at 70mph+, thinking they're getting away with it. The amount of times I've seen someone glance down, look up and slam on the brakes because traffic has stopped :(

I have given up worrying. I just undertake the lot, not at pace and certainly not aggressively. I just fill the gaps they leave and make my progress at a steady pace and slot in where I need to slot in. You can see their constant on and off on the brakes as they work their hardest to ensure no one moves into the gap between them and the lemming in front. If you practice good lane control on a busy motorway it's amazing how the inner lanes clear for you...
It's quite interesting when you look at it really how you can have two cars, both doing 70mph and without speeding or breaking any laws one can get much further ahead, and probably more efficiently through not accelerating or braking by simply looking at the road ahead and planning what/where/when & how. Someone so terrified that another car will get in front they are accelerating to close a gap, and then slamming on the brakes.

Yup. Waft along and pick your lane but always making progress. Let idiots be idiots just be observant....and not obvious

Why? Will it magically make me think that it's OK for a 44ton vehicle to ignore the 50mph limits on roads?

Never gone 6MPH over the speed limit yourself? It's not like they're flying along at 90 is it? Go to the US/Mexico and you'd have a heart attack at the speed HGVs drive at.

Not in slowing heavy traffic, no I haven't

Not once in your life? Better become a driving instructor with those skills :p

Most of the terrible driving I see in average speed zones is from car drivers either not keeping a constant speed, doing 46MPH in the outside lane, sitting directly in the blind spot of a HGV for miles, braking for no reason, not understanding the word “average” and braking for each camera, the list is endless. Sure you get the occasional tailgating truck but it’s normally a direct result of the above behaviour. I’ve never felt intimidated by a truck in an average speed zone, normally because I’m either going as fast / faster than them, or slower and move out of their way when I can see they want to pass.

My Mrs asked me the question "do you think the people braking for each came think that it's the average speed you go through each camera?" I never thought of it that way so either people are either really clever or really thick. I have a feeling which way it is:p.

had 5/6 weeks off from driving recently and really did not enjoy getting back behind the wheel on Saturday,

roads are jam packed with middle lane morons people who change lane then indicate people jumping red lights and that was only on one journey. ffs

truck drivers i tend to find are 99% spot on good lane discipline paying attention for the most part and switched on.
apart from the odd nutter independant which is getting a rare sight these days limiter fuse pulled giving it big licks down the A75

General ignorance of the needs of others and their different vehicles characteristics as shown by a few in this thread. Usually car drivers who've never driven anything else and think they know everything.

So recently moved to a small town and a new annoyance.

People who do not return to their side of the road after overtaking a parked car/obstruction, instead remaining on the oncoming for 100+ yards with oncoming traffic.
I'm not expecting a violent swerve but make a ******* effort!

Also, people who don't give way and just follow the car in front when the parked car is on their side of the road. It's not your right of way!!!! :p

There's a street by me which can fit two cars going opposite directions with cars parked but they both have to move to the edge. Now when people try to barge through in the middle of the road, I just keep going, make them either stop or go back to their side.
