"Submarine" lights

It’s a myth that you’re not allowed to have lights on inside the car whilst driving.
Correct....
However, if the police feel it is distracting you, or otherwise affecting your driving then they can pull you for it.
Also, aside from momentary lights such as reversing and indicators, it is an offence to have any light other than red showing at the rear of your vehicle. This includes SatNavs as well.

Shouldn't you be paying attention to the road and not the child in the back? They're not exactly going anywhere are they?
Some children do require a higher degree of observation, such as those who might have an asthma or epileptic attack... and you can't exactly start banning those parents from having their kids in the car... unless you're happy to fund either private home-visit teachers for each child who can't be in a car, or for every such family to move to within walking distance of the school.

Dunno I’ve not seen many owls driving who can look over their shoulder, through the headrest and directly behind them

To be fair I always have my daughter diagonally across from me - so that when she gets out of the car it's always curbside.

So just ignore any noises until the next motorway junction ?

We should ban all buttons and screens in cars too whilst we are at it. Oh and no longer check your mirrors when changing direction as that’s also taking your eyes off the road.

Never read such rubbish in my life

Talk about talking *******s. What is your primary responsibility whilst driving? To drive safely. If you are doing something that is not conducive to driving then it is detracting from driving. It is simple as that. Its for that very reason that things like mobile phone use are heavily restricted/banned. Heck, my car even has a warning about the infotainment system being distracting and not to use it when you should be paying attention to the road! The GF's sat nav does the same.

Checking your mirrors isn't taking your eyes off the road as you are looking at the road to see if it is clear or occupied. You are not doing that when you're looking at a child that is sitting doing sweet FA. And if that child isn't doing sweet FA then you pull over WHEN IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.

If they require a higher degree of observation then they're a safety risk. Why is use of a mobile phone banned? Why is it illegal to drive when doing things such as reading a newspaper? You cannot be fully in control if you're observing something not related to driving...

Evidence ^^

If your kid is a medical liability then they should have someone available at all times to assist. You know...the other parent.

You've can't honestly tell me that you've never ever glanced at something else in the car and taken your eyes off the road.

It's your kids for God sake, whilst they may not be going anywhere, it's natural to check that they're okay in the back.

Bit of common sense, seemingly Simon lacks that though.

I don’t have a mirror on the kid anyway and ignore it but can see the value of a mirror which is what the OP is asking.

I don’t think he was asking for driving lessons.

Looking over your shoulder behind you is just as bad, in fact it makes it harder for the passenger to check the kid.

Anyway I Don’t really think about which side as I don’t park on roads.

What is odd is you apparent anger towards this subject. Didn’t your parents show you enough attention or something :p

Don’t have passengers then. They will distract you just as much.

You don’t sit there watching them !

Just if you have to check them. Maybe once in a journey cause they start choking or something then it’s safer with a mirror...

Are you just trolling ?

Choking on what? Air? Do kids choke silently? Do they only stand the risk of choking at that one moment you look at them?

How do you put things in your mouth?

Generally with a fork. Do babies use forks? Or are you stupid enough to leave objects within range of a baby in the back of a car that they can put in their mouth?
Or do you employ a modicum of intelligence and think 'hmm, what could I do to reduce the risk of this child choking?'

Which I'm sure OP would agree with, hence asking about lighting in the back of his car - he's already stated that he has a second mirror for the exactly purpose of avoiding swivelling his head.

Perhaps learn to read the OP before commenting, eh?

Yes, it's a 2nd mirror, fitted to the left of the standard mirror. It's not like I sit and stare for miles after mile. It's no more of a risk that checking the rear view or wing mirrors.

I'm guessing Dis86 is simply trolling for a reaction which is quite pathetic.
