Quite. I’ve just checked back in after my response yesterday to find pages of crap!?!Seriously, what has this turned into?
But we're talking about very young children here who are seemingly at risk of death when left unattended for short periods. How are they going to reach the controls? Especially when strapped in?
Happy to view some sources on the safety if you can provide them.
I was merely following up on your statement that a child "Can even help change songs if they're old enough.". If they're old enough to mess with the stereo, logic dictates that they're also old enough to interact with other controls, too.
With regards to sources, feel free to spend some time looking for them yourself, there are plenty out there.
No no. That's not how it works. You make a claim, you back it up.

@Dis86 - WTF is the problem here?
Ok.

Are we done?
Edit: To be clear, the above sources are all stating that kids are safer in the rear. Given that information, it also follows that a parent should have a safe way to keep an eye on them. Checking in a mirror on occasion is no different to any other mirror check, or a shoulder check when merging into traffic. @Dis86 - do you have a grown up with you to check your blind spot, so you can pay full attention to the road ahead? A second of distraction could have major consequences if you haven't
Some articles do also state that you should also have a second adult/parent with you to keep an eye on the child. Which is fair enough, but some of us don't have that luxury.
It's an additional check that takes away from driving. Simple. The sources of provided clearly state this. They even quantify it as being far more distracting than using a mobile. Are you ok with people driving on their phones? If not then why are you ok with something that is far more distracting? Or...is it as I suspect...You do it yourself and so because you do it it just be ok?
You've even now conceded that your own links support what I stated earlier - someone else should be there to look after the child.
The OP is asking about fitting a small light in the rear to illuminate his child when he glances at it in the rear view mirror.Have a look at the sources I provided scania. Basically children in the car are 12 times more distracting than using a mobile phone.
We can all acknowledge why mobiles are banned yet people seem to think it's ok to pay attention to a child.
Not at all, I'm not ok with people driving with their phones. I keep an eye on my child when she is in the car with me - I can do so via my rear view mirror - she's old enough to be front facing now, so it's a simple check.
Yes, and if you'd read my entire statement, I also said that some of us don't have that luxury. Solo journeys with a child happen on a daily basis.
I really don't understand why you feel the need to argue this. People have children in their car. They like to be able to keep an eye on them. Not interact, not play, not reach back or turn around. Just a cursory eye. That's all. You ca argue statistics and numbers and figures all you like, but people are human - they check on their offspring. If you personally don't feel the need to check on the thing that you love the most in the world, then please, please don't ever procreate.

I’m a parent and - when she was much younger - I used to keep an eye on her in my rear view mirror, admittedly I never felt the need for further illumination but if the OP wishes it then why not? Imo there’s nothing wrong with this and it’s far better than glancing over your shoulder at the child.
Your making a massive mountain out of a molehill.
So you don't have a problem with people doing something that is widely regarded as being massively dangerous, so much so that it's banned. Clearly you have no integrity so shouldn't really be trying to argue points of safety.
Secondly you don't care about research and evidence. Clearly you have no integrity so shouldn't be trying to argue facts.
Thirdly you're proving my point by admission about acting in an irrational manner when it comes to your child.
Look at it this way - youve decided I want to check your phone/child/radio/whatever. Clearly this is fine with you. Youve stated that above. In the time youve done that youve just hit a kid. You know, that thing you love the most in the world. Yet you don't see the hypocrisy in your actions and statements.
What? I've clearly stated that I do have a problem with people using their phones...?
Also - you've managed to equate checking a mirror with using a mobile phone whilst driving. How? Do you not check your mirrors when you drive?
On a hands free, I do it daily, there’s one fitted to my truck - and all the vehicles in our fleet and before you jump down my throat, if I’m driving in say central London or manoeuvring onto a loading bay I just ignore it or drop the call completely, if I’m trundling along the motorway or on an a-road and I feel it’s ok to answer,I will.Would you drive whilst on your mobile?
Totally misread that! Apologies.
How any times do I have to state this before you and others get it? Checking your mirrors to view the road and traffic around you is part of driving. Part of safe driving. Checking the contents of the back seat isn't.
And the reason it's being equated is because having a child in the car is 12 times more distracting than using a phone. Using a phone, as I've stated repeatedly, is restricted due to the danger. Yet you and others are clearly supporting something 12 times more dangerous. It's not logical.

Invariably I’ll stop to make calls because I often have to write down collection references etc.
Would I drive along and not keep an eye on a small child sat behind me? If I was alone in the car with the small child then of course not.

I support phone use, as long as it doesn't cause any issues with driving. I don't agree with banning this and that, I'd prefer more powers to just do people for silly driving, if you use a phone and swerve then yes do them. If they use a phone and nothing, then what's the problem.
I personally don't like using s phone while driving other than in its mount on my dash.
I find using some of the cars functions more distracting, setting the air vents is more screen presses than changing the route on my phone. Shame common sense doesn't come in to it.
