Looking to move somewhere in Europe - CheckList?

Straight away off that list I'd say that Amsterdam and Berlin would be easiest in the sense that so many people speak English in both cities, so you'd find it easier to adjust to those two places. Of those two I'd personally choose Amsterdam. I found Berlin a bit sterile and lifeless, particularly for such a major city. Don't get me wrong, it's nice and I felt very safe there, but it's not somewhere I'd want to live. I've been to Amsterdam twice and I've always thought it's beautiful, pretty easy to get around, most things are within easy reach, it's not ridiculously expensive, and nearly everybody speaks English.

If you speak Spanish then I'd probably plump for Barcelona because of the lifestyle, culture and climate, though I know very little about the job market there having only ever been there on holiday. Madrid is a beautiful city as well so you might want to consider moving there too. I've never been to Frankfurt or Lisbon so I can't comment on those two.

I hope you're not moving to escape your problems, I know plenty of people who have done that and invariably their problems end up just following them.

I seem to get a fair few emails about jobs in Holland and personally love Holland. So that would probably be my destination.

I'm currently looking to relocate to Vienna, though it isn't Brexit related or anything like that.
Vienna has to be one of the best value housing markets in Europe for a Capital city.

OP. What about Stockholm? Beautiful City.

Choose a country that has a **** easy driving test [ your UK licence will have a limited lifespan ], I'm thinking certainly not Germany where a
psychiatric assessment and a stiff medical is mandatory.

Also a country that has a completely free health system, low taxes, a unbiased national broadcaster, an unarmed police force,
local, regional and national administrations that are free from corruption and a multicultural society where minorities' rights
are safeguarded by law..............hold on a minute , do I mean dear old Blighty ?

Anywhere in the EU, you can swap out your license with trivial ease. You also don't have to, but with Brexit coming...

I have outlined these places so far:

  • Amsterdam
  • Berlin
  • Frankfurt
  • Barcelona
  • Lisbon?
Thanks in advance

An expensive list. Why these places? Why not other cities in those countries? Do you need a big city? Why does your list not include other capitals such as Copenhagen or Paris?

Most of Europe offers lovely places to live. You'll need to tell us what your criteria are for us to offer worthwhile advice.

On the German side I'd remove Frankfurt from the list (it's an absolute dump) and swap it with Munich. Plenty of tech jobs there and well located for travel around the alps.

But Munich has very, very high living expenses, doesn't it? Certainly that's what I hear from colleagues who have lived there.

In most EU countries you just exchange your license. Did that last month here in Switzerland, take 10minutes plus and eye test
I guess it's still possible at the moment, not sure how that will pan out next year. Maybe it'll stay the same, maybe not.

Difficult to put forward valid suggestions without a real idea of what kind of lifestyle and culture you are wanting. However, if you'd consider Scandinavia I would heartily recommend Stockholm. I've been around a fair bit and, of the various locations, Stockholm was one that really jumped out at me in a 'yeah I could live here' way.

Beautiful city, clean, efficient, and if you don't have a second language, Sweden removes that barrier and makes it much easier to integrate. Fitness lifestyle of many of the residents was also very noticeable; plenty of cycle routes, running routes etc. I can say nothing about the job market in the field you are in though.

As a region, Bavaria also appealed to me; you'd have a few options there / Austria.

Surely a more difficult driving test is a good thing. It means you have better drivers around you on the roads. Driving round a place where the licence is **** easy to obtain means I will be the best driver on the road surrounded by drivers of questionable mental state who also cant drive at all. That's a terrible thing IMO.

I'd much rather be on roads where people have been properly and stringently taught and tested with high level driving standards.

I would put a language you can speak or learn, a social life that suits your preferences, and compatible culture above all of those things.
Good point and I'd agree - I was thinking from my own perspective, where I have those three covered already.

No specific advice to offer, and it might be obvious, but don't assume those around you, like us fellow OcUK forumites, share anything like the same values that you might hold. Where to live is a highly subjective decision. One person might put "no blacks" at the top of their list, and dismiss what someone else might consider a fantastic place to stay. You don't have to look that far from this thread at all to see exactly that sort of disparity in value systems.
