Windows 10

Installed the new update and start menu is full of live tiles saying "a great app is on its way" Any idea on how to fix or just wait?

So they gave the file explorer a black screen and yet other parts of the UI like the control panel and networking remain white!!!!

Why?

Just do the whole damn thing!

Someone needs a word with that Nadella.

That's some bad cropping skills though :p.

Is this an upgrade? Looks like a fresh install, it usually prompts the apps stuff. Best thing to do is to just wait.

Just installed the "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1809" took about 25 minutes. It was a big one as they don't normally take that long.

One thing I have noticed is that I used to be able to shut windows down with my favourite tabs open then after a reboot I just needed to load Edge again and all my tabs would be there.

Now after the update I have to set my tabs aside in order for them to be there at the next boot. Its not a major problem and I am sure I'll get into the habit of setting them aside.

One good thing about doing it this way is that I can set my tabs aside and close Edge completely and then when I reload Edge my tabs are still set aside.

Installed the update at work and Edge is now completely broken, not that it wasn't already, and a load of my personal files are gone. Nothing that was worth keeping but both issues are now being widely reported.

We seriously need an alternative to Windows, it's getting worse by the release and given the 18 month support cycle it'll get to the point where it'll be more dangerous to upgrade than run without patching.

How can files just magically disappear ?

I've been using Windows since 3.1 and not a single update magically removed files .

Seen a few reports of files disappearing with the update but nothing substantial yet or any pattern so don't know if it is anything more than user error. Pretty concerning if it is the update.

Have you not heard of macOS?

What, you mean that OS which, in practical terms, means you have to buy specialist hardware that is usually around 50 - 100% more expensive, like for like.

Which is a shame, as it is quite nice, I have to admit.

Win10 is a powerful OS, but they don’t seem to give a toss about user experience, that is for sure.
