Never a truer word spoken. There are of course any number of replacements, and all of them better. I've been using Start10 since day 1 and i just take it for granted now that it's there and it works. It updates every so often and continues to work. If only the same could be said for Windows!

Problem is - though so far it mostly hasn't been a big issue - with the ever changing nature of Windows 10 an update can potentially completely break the functionality something like shell replacement programs rely on potentially rendering the whole OS unbootable, etc. or just very glitchy. Though so far the developers of programs like Start10 have been fairly pro-active in that regard.
Yeah beneath the hood there is some good stuff but the approach in terms of user interface and shell mechanics, etc. meh they really don't seem to give a **** about the quality of life experience of the end user and ultimately the purpose of an OS is to facilitate the user.

Indeed, I would much rather they concentrated on getting the basics nailed down, than adding any more new features. Everything is so half baked and glitchy. Very annoying. It is not completely without merit but it’s true, the like of Apple show how it should be done. I’d probably be typing this post on an Win10 machine instead of an iPad if Win10 was actually good!
Might be something to do with Disk Cleanup utility, some people reported it has been deleting the downloads folder.
You're confusing two things. Disk Cleanup now has an option for emptying the Download folder. That is of course optional.
As for things being deleted during the upgrade, there are more than a few reports of user data being lost in the process. Tough luck if you're stupid enough to do a major upgrade without backing up your work!
MS probably shouldn't have sacked their testers. Having said that, a lot of people seem to have upgraded with no problems.

Looks like Insiders also experienced it prior to release; Documents and Photos folders completely wiped. Definitely backup before upgrading.

The upgrade is also being blocked on systems which are running certain versions of the Intel Display Audio Driver. Which will be most modern Intel CPUs if you are using the integrated graphics.

Wonder if it is related to the new onedrive system they are implementing that "automatically" identifies files you don't use often and moves them to onedrive - I'd hope that was off by default though but I can see that going badly wrong and/or people imagining their files are deleted when they are in dropbox. Didn't think it was active yet though.
EDIT: That link tends to confirm it is related to that... if so that is truly utterly facepalm worthy of MS and they really need to start firing people and bringing in developers with actual vision who can foresee these issues :|
I'm still on Windows 8.1 but always try the latest builds of 10 as a clean install and I'm glad it flat out doesn't work for me. Playing deinterlaced videos with the latest AMD drivers is borked and trying to watch live TV with WMC is impossible due to drivers repeatedly crashing. Usually I last a few weeks until the niggles get me down but since this has proved unusable in the first hour, I get to save a lot of time. 
Sounds plausible. It’s either that or Microsoft have adopted a new ransomware licensing model for Windows.
The last time I checked, the Surface Pro is about the same price as a MacBook Pro. Yes, Windows 10 is nice, I use it on my Desktop and prefer it to macOS on a desktop (but not laptop), however the update shambles is a disgrace.

Sure you could pick any machine that may be the same price but I'm sure I could find you a machine with similar or better specs than a Macbook for significantly less money.
As for Windows 10 being nice... Well... That is certainly a matter of opinion and not one that I share!
I think it is manual update only at the moment. Also see above mention of update blocking due to Intel Audio.

So if I update my intel Audio drivers.that should work?
I know someone that can't get it installed from 1803 to 1809 build, does the download and gets to the 15% after reboot and says undoing changes, goes back to desktop after awhile and says
This is via Windows update and media creation tool via USB , also tried with Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant, scratching my head on how to fix this, got the feeling this update was rushed through the door without proper testing.
No file or registry/HD errors, memory is fine, all drivers installed, so this will be fun and games to fixed
.I did install 1809 version fine on my laptop so going to try my desktop PC next and see if that gets any issues, got a feeling I should stay on 1803 build since that is running sweet for me with zero issues, sometimes it pays to wait.
I wonder how many more bugs/issues they will find, they should really do more testing on their new Win10 final builds if they want users to stay with 10.
That will be the answer if you are receiving the block message (and will be something you need to anyway if your current version is a problematic one). The automated rollout through Windows Update is very slow during the initial week or two. Some people "skip the queue" by running the update manually.

how do u run the update manually?
Given the current issues being reported I wouldn't go this route unless you are comfortable/confident.
