First RTX2070 review

sorry but that is on amd then to not make stock settings better. We are probaly prepared to tinker to get every last drop out of our hardware - it is the nature of these forums - but a product should be judged on how 95% of the users will use it imo, and that is by taking it out of the box and running it.

sure, chat about overclocking etc as a fun little extra but ultimately the cards are only warrantied to do exactly what they say on the box and that is how they should be judged.

Well for a start, I was only explaining to Distracted why the disparity between some reviews and user benchmarks.

And secondly, Asus have acknowledged the problem with the Strix card and have allowed users to change the Thermal Pads without voiding the warranty. There was thread somewhere about it.

Lastly, Most reviews these days have an overclocking section to try and get the best out of the card. Yet, why can't they show how to get the best out of Vega? It's easier to undervolt than it is to setup a custom fan profile.

If your stance is that only warrantied to do exactly what they say on the tin, shouldn't they stop any form of overclocking? especially from reviewers?

That’s hilarious. AMD fans were saying the same BS when Vega was released. Drivers will mature the card will improve to 1080ti levels... absolute nonsense. Selective memory from AMD fans.

However in this case the card will improve with DLSS and drivers. We’ll get RTX cores turned in and windows update to enable it. There are physical cores on the cards that haven’t been activated yet, rather than software driver promises that never materialise.

Yes, it was BS back then and it's BS now. There are no miracle drivers.

Just like there will be no major performance increases for normal games from drivers for Turing cards.

The performance increases from DLSS are a complete unknown at the moment but I don't think you will have too many cases where a game on the 2070 will become 25% faster than the 1080Ti.

interesting from a couple of the reviews how nvidia hasn't sent any founders cards out as even they acknowledge they are poor value hahahaha. another thing any of the value charts they are showing will be pointless once the 2070s actually start selling as i bet the rrps wont stick where they are supposed to.

Do we even know when the first title supporting dlss will be released? Still no rtx on tomb raider and it's already on sale on steam

Anandtech have one and tested it. Managed 2100+Mhz running which seems to be better than the AIB non founders. Though you paY THROUGH THE NOSE FOR IT

Never trust OC numbers from review sites unless they buy the cards themselves. They always get sent golden samples which achieve OC 99% of people won't see.

It will be interesting to see how cheap the non RTX 2060 that is rumoured will be considering it is not going to need RTX hardware and is on same cheap 12nm a 2070/80/ti. Should actually be cheap to make and more down to earth for the causal gamer.

These new chips are huge, would be nice to see what cost is passed onto the consumer for the simpler smaller chips.

2080's are not selling and 2070's make even less sense given the glut of 1080/1080TI's there are on the market. Nvidia have really dropped the ball on the 2xxx series.

There's no denial. Look at the image/chart at the link I posted and then read my previous single sentence post again :) and then ask yourself what the problem was you had with it and why you posted what you did in reply :D. No need to be touchy with positive thoughts towards the 20 series, let people have their opinions and be more open to future potential. I know people can be touchy hence why I underlined the word "could" in the first place so was surprised you picked an issue with it.

On another note, if DLSS does not rely on third parties in some way then why is it not usable in all games now, why is there not an option to enable it? Surely NV need to work with the software houses to get it implemented and the game(s) patched up to support it?
Whether you like it or not, the potential is there even for the 2070 to blow away the 1080 Ti in the future, according to NV. Wehther that potential is fully realised, nobody knows at present :D. I suspect it won't be, but, damnit I'm open to the possibllity that it could be.

What we need to put all the nonsense to bed is proper tests comparising the old and new GPU's as new games are released and the new features are supported. Hopefully we can agree on that? That's where the success of these cards is to be determined and that is also where the true story is going to be told, not speculation or negativity without a firm basis.

My last few hardware buys both cpu, gpu and memory have all been in the ballpark of site tested examples. Also nvidia are likely binning FE cards and suiting the overclocking software to match, so I do not see anything unusual in this score.

Never trust overclocking figures from sites is rather narrow minded and reminds me more of the ES Conroe days.....

So it's looking like pricing is from £459. It's quite a bit slower than a 1080Ti but also quite a bit cheaper than the ~£600 you can buy a 1080Ti for. I was expecting the 2070 to cost a lot more than it does.

I do have to agree with @melmac about the DLSS, it sounded so good and my hopes were very high for it to work, but with the little analysis that we have had so far it seems to fall a bit short of expectations. Maybe once we actually get a game or two using it might seem better than initial analysis, but we shall see.

As for the 2070 it seems quite a good card, it competes very favourably with the 1080 and Vega 64, by the looks of it. Of course having said that it is priced too high and unless the cheaper versions can come in well below the FE price, then I would say good card at a bad price. Which covers pretty much the entire 20xx range so far.

Considering the die sizes of the Turing range I do feel that the performance is good, but the prices are not.

It is easy to get caught up in the shuffling of the naming tier's and the chip code names, just look at the die sizes.

2070 TU106 445mm²

2080 TU104 545mm²

2080ti TU102 754mm²

1060 GP106 200mm²

1080 GP104 314mm²

1080ti GP102 471mm²

These Turing chips are huge by comparison to the previous Pascal chips and I'm sure it is not all because of the Tensor and RT cores.

Yup, AMD should have lowered the voltage and sorted the fan speeds out themselves before they released them, not left it to their buyers, whom they actually never told anyway, as when i got my liquid, i had no information in with it, stating that i had to lower the voltage, change the fan speeds etc... before use.

Why all the reviews saying they sucked 600w+, and were hotter than the sun were wrong too, as they were never told either. :p
