Can someone help me with a math (fraction) question?

I'm not good at maths, but I'm quite good at English. And it is spelled "maths". It is short for "mathematics". :p

You're not making much sense here, please link to a clear definition of what you're referring to here by "portion" and why it can't be written as 2/5

Why? The question asks for a fraction, that is all. You're just making up your own conditions here.

What fraction of the total goals did the top 6 teams score?

How is 2/5 correct? What is 2 and what is 5?

you could answer 2/5 of the 25 goals. But what's the point?

The fraction is 10 out of the 25. ie 10/25 when expressed in the same format as the data in the question.

I think you've got hung up on "total goals"

If someone were to ask what fraction or what portion of the total UK population is female would you present the answer by making sure the denominator contained the total UK population? You're being silly here for no reason.
 
Right okay, so we've established that ratios in the question aren't mathematical fractions, but you want to give the answer as a mathematical fraction and simplify it.

The question literally asks for a fraction as the answer.

I'd half suspect it was designed to cause internet arguments, but rather those argument to be over whether to read 3/5 as implying there were literally 5 goals scored in the first half.

You've decided instead to pick an argument over whereat to leave an answer as 10/25 or to simplify it to to 2/5.

Yes, the fraction of the total goals. Which is 10 out of 25 goals. Not 2 out of 5 goals.

They're not the same are they?!!

If you think you can simplify it, try to answer the question with the following...

1st half 6/10 goals, 2nd half 13/20. Simplify the 6/10 back to 3/5 and you'll get a different answer. THEY ARE NOT FRACTIONS.

No one said "2 out of 5 goals."

You're just making up your own conditions here, if you think it looks better to write 10 out of 25 goals etc.. then that's fine. but there isn't anything incorrect as far as the question is concerned in giving 2/5 as the answer (given previously mentioned assumptions).
