Was planning on buying a Maximus hero’s XI mobo for the 9900k

But just seen another post with people saying the asus boards for Z390 are no good.

Apparently custom service (RMA) from Asus is no good.

Personally I’ve never had an issue from ASUS products ever.

Just wondered what people’s experiences were and to why they’d choose another manufacturer

Hi

Asus have messed up on the majority of the Z390 lineup. I would take a Gigabyte Aorus at the same price if it was Me. The Hero is a 4 phase if I remember correctly (Buildzoid video).

The issue with the Maximus hero’s XI is not really the 4 phase VRM its the cost attached to it.

The gigabyte is the better mobo on paper and many have returned their Maximus hero’s XI due to the cost cutting of ASUS while they still charge a premium for the board.

I went with the Asrock Extreme 4 z390 for £166 it has few quirks and I'm not 100 percent sure I'll not be returning it yet.

The last gigabyte mobo I had was with a 5930k and it was garbage.. and I hate gigabyte bios's :(

You guys know if the Maximus formula is any better?

Just having a look at the Aorus Master now, it takes 2x 8-Pin ATX 12V as well as the 24-pin.

The reason ?

I think the higher end Asus boards are ok. Maybe @orbitalwalsh can chip in on that.

The 2 x 8 pin is just for extra power for the cpu if doing extreme overclocking. It will work fine with just one plugged in.

That was kind of my point. They have gone backwards on Z390. The Z370 Hero board was a lot better if I am not mistaken. They (Asus) just seem to think they can release sub par products and people will buy them, cos Asus.

Yeah Gigabyte bios is still work in progress.

Sadly cost cutting seems to have hit both brands and Gigabyte's BIOS are quite hit and miss - some nice features but also lag behind sometimes on some of the newer feature support.

Generally I've found Asus motherboards to be garbage personally degrading far too quickly for the price you pay and as above lately they seem to think people are mugs and will still pay for the name even when they put out **** and if your all singing, all dancing, "top of the line", "premium" motherboard has a problem/dies shortly after purchase they will quite happily send you out a cruddy refurbished board as a replacement (so better to go through the retailer if you can).

Out of the two I'd still buy Gigabyte but not as favourable towards them as I used to be.

Giga = Crapper Bios, amazing power delivery
Asus = Best Bios in Z390, not much good to say about power delivery

Its why I bought a Z390 Aorus Xtreme, best VRM setup this gen so far according to some.

How is that Xtreme board?

Been looking at the master, but a little tempted in the above

I'm still in the planning stages of my new system, I took the case apart to plan out the install. What I can say so far of the board is its built like a tank!

Its heavy AF, build quality is top notice and there is serious amounts of ALU for the VRMs and one of the M.2 slots.

Asus have brand power and bios on their side along with A LOT of influencers , like oc3d whom haven't done AVX VRM loads on their Asus z390 products. Did with Gigabyte and even attacked an OCUK promo on the ultra z370 board ( to be fair, good gigabyte had a naff heatsink design )

Gigabyte flipped the switch and went design overload, in theory handle 10 core chips just fine to .

Bios they are starting to change around , finally . Least with bios it can be improved, board design not .

MSI have also done so well!!!
Asus and ASRock, eye off the ball , was huge fan of ASRock z97 boards

Asus use to have good UK RMA , not any more or same extent as gigabyte, live north of London can drop your product in . Always meant to go reseller but sometimes it's handy straight to vendor

I’ve went giga for a few new systems x470 ultra gaming 7 WiFi ,X399 xtreme, Z390 master after buying Asus for ages. No doubt the bios is better but they are just taking the wee now with VRM solutions and pricing and god help you if you have to RMA.

I ditched Asus this time for Gigabyte mainly because the quality is no longer there with Asus. They are charging silly amounts of money for boards that just don't have the quality that the same series of boards (Hero etc) had four or five years ago. The Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro that I have is a cracking board but the bios is just bloody terrible. I have finished tweaking and I hope I never have to go back into it because it's that bad.

For overclocking you actually spend a lot of time in the bios while finding your max and then tweaking things, especially if clocking the memory as well. The bios should be laid out in a logical way and Gigabyte is so poor in that department. Asus has it bang on and has by far the best bios layout so it's a shame that the quality of their boards have declined so much while prices have risen dramatically.

Totally agree. The last good Gigabyte bios I worked with (compared to the competition) was all the way back in P45 days (DQ6 motherboard) Since then I've mainly stuck with Asus boards, in large part due to superior bios' but with their recent penny pinching I've gone back to Gigabyte for my 9700K. Even now they are just about bearable and you want to spend as little time in there as possible so thankfully this chip was a breeze to overclock and get stable.

Personally i have only ever had problem with asus boards. MSI all the way for me.

Mine had arrived yet, but still for the amount of time spent in it, how good do you really need it to be???

a bad bios can make for a lot of problem even when your not in it
