So my insurance want a cat5 tracker installed on the car, no problem it already has one.

My disbelief came that Vodafone want nearly 400 quid a year for the subscription LOL. The insurance isnt much more than that.

I was reading through the T+Cs though and that subscription only seems to cover the fact someone will be looking out if the car moves without the driver fob and theyll call me to confirm if thats the case and theyll run checks each month to check the tracker is working.

So the question is, if I dont want these things, and dont subscribe, if someone nicked the car, would Vodafone help track it if it was reported stolen?

@Burnsy2023 maybe you have an idea?

Otherwise I have a fantastic deal from smartrack which do lifetime subscriptions, so will switch to that.

Surely Vodafone are the people to be asking here?

I'm going to say the answer is no, why would they be of assistance when you're no longer paying them?

This is kind of what I was thinking, but the actual T+Cs dont actually say the subscription is required for tracking the car, only for them to be monitoring and calling me if the car moves without the driver fob.

Afterall you do pay a good few hundred notes for the thing to buy it and install it, it seems almost like the subscription is a bit of a con for a basic service.

Vodafone were remarkably evasive when I asked them (no surprise there).

Is the insurance requirement to have a tracker installed or an active subscription?

(I’m presuming there’s no point in having a tracker unless there’s an active subscription anyway).

Going to check tomorrow with insurance, i guess their answer will be more telling.

Drives a nice car, quibbles over £400... just ribbing.

It is quite frustrating with some of these things relating to insurance - seems they just add a 0 or two to the price just because they can and you don't have a lot of options - passed time the industry was much more regulated :(

That's my issue, if i got a new voda tracker installation done it would be under 200 notes a year, but because its a historic product they want to take the ****.

I dont like being taken for a mug.

I have a Vodafone automotive system on mine. I didn't chose it, but it was on the car when I bought it so just got it turned on. It works well because I leave the house so often without my fob and within 5 minutes, without fail I get a phone call. They don't even get angry that I am so, what was it again...yes, forgetful. I think I pay around £300 a year for the service but can't remember exactly. See a theme here...

God forbid I should spend all that money on a 10 year Lambo and find £34 a month a hardship to keep it safe.
You know how many people end up in a position to afford such things? By not spunking money away when it's not needed.

So managed to nail vodafone down this morning anyway.

Car will still be fully tracked even without a subscription, just ring up the police, get a crime reference number and then they will work with them to recover the car, the subscription just covers the driver cards (aka if you try move the car without the driver card they will call).

There you go, £400 a year saved.

I know you have cctv etc, but have you not looked into getting a security gate installed at the end of your drive?

Once I get the driveway re-done I might look at a rising bollard or something, but wouldnt have gates.

Partaking in a subscription which costs less than two adults visiting the cinema and having a hotdog and popcorn, once per month, is not really a pathway to the ownership, or lack thereof, of a car that costs only £70k
