Freedom of speech in education

Words are like bullets, and I let them pass straight through me.

The guidelines seem very vague so will it really change anything?

"Our guidance makes clear that freedom of speech in higher education should be upheld at every opportunity and should only be limited where there are genuine safety concerns or it constitutes unlawful behaviour."

So if far left/Antifa types start rioting and getting violent towards controversial speakers as it generally happens in US universities is that not a safety concern? so you can effectively shut speakers down by throwing a big violent tantrum.

The 53-page document says that students have a right to not invite people to their institutions on account of concerns about their views - a practice it says is wrongly referred to as "no-platforming".

So the vocal far left will still be able to choose to stop anyone whose views they disagree with from speaking.

With the "Learn to Code" thing going around and various things, i see the backlash is finally starting to kick in. But i agree mmj, they're just guidelines and because of that they can easily be ignored (and will be)

The NUS is the problem here. It should be shut down.

Probably not a million miles from the truth.

Obviously I can't vouch for other universities, but at mine engagement with the SU is practically non-existant. It's easy to look at all this "safe space" stuff and assume that it's what the majority of young peolle are in to. But from what I've seen at least, it isn't. It's what the people in charge at the SU, and their mates, are in to. The vast majority just walk past and ignore it all.

Our SU is dead. They took out the bar. They took out the pool table. They took out the Xboxes and TVs. And they stopped doing food. Their idea of "fun" is a singalong to The Greatest Showman. They host this in the bar, where the optics are now filled with sugar-free orange squash...

We're now in "Feel Good February", which is possibly the 4th month since September where the focus has been on mental health. Yup, that's probably correct, as October was "Black History Month". I'm assuming next month it'll be "Mental Health March" or something.

Aside from the staff, there's maybe 2-3 students in the place at a time. The ground floor of the library is basically the new common room.

It's pretty much bankrupt at the moment. They have had to let dozens of staff go. I think they got woke and went broke.

I wonder if that could be linked to the above? Assuming it's widespread (no idea if it is or not), sales of alcohol and food would have been a decent source of revenue. Instead, they're focussing on activities that don't generate revenue, and movie screenings which maybe generate a few hundred quid revenue per month.

Only reason I'm a member is because I live <5 mins from a Co-op and it gets me 10% off. The other student discount schemes (UniDays, StudentBeans and VoucherCodes Student) are better. I know quite a few people who aren't NUS members because they see no benefit any more.

Lol, small reminder.

...the right to freedom of expression is not absolute...

So many people think it is, it's embarrassing how dumb that idea is. Regardless with "far-right" terrorism as it's so woefully described everywhere, Unions can just imply that certain groups are in fact inciting terrorism, thus entirely negating this pointless story. I'd love for that to go to trial honestly, see where the judiciary lies.

Student Unions will inherently always be run by people who either want to make their tenure longer for the sake of it, an enhanced part of their CV or ultimately people who think they "care" about everyone else.

No one else bothers because the culture around it is long since dead, it's not the 60s anymore, people just go for the bar's and socials, that's it.

The right to freedom of expression is not even a thing we have. When people are being convicted of hate crimes for jokes about Nazi pugs, or quoting rap lyrics, that's when you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we don't have freedom of expression.

Looks like the end of the pathetic safe spaces in universities, about time really it's producing a generation of perpetually offended weaklings.
The lack of your self-awareness is only slightly more funny than the obvious and unintended irony of your post. All you do is whine on this forum, you're like toddler that can type. What are you doing about the link in your OP that you care so much about, ore any of the other threads you start and moan in? Can I guess? Is it ... absolutely nothing? I thought so.

Says the angry, broken manbaby with a penchant for homoerotic tales of unrequited antipodean romance at the supermarket checkout ;)
