Hello all

Missus needs a new laptop but her budget is limited.

She doesn't game and doesn't video or photo edit. It's going to be used for Microsoft Office and web browsing so cpu, ram and GPU don't need to be super important.

I can't bear for her to buy a screen that is awful, so want 1080p.

It will mostly be used near a power socket so battery life is not critical.

I know a lot of people might say any generic pc world machine will do but I do want to ensure that the laptop is well built.

So budget, she's said £300 new. I've told her she needs to up her budget to up to £500 and consider used.

I've been looking at ThinkPad carbon on eBay which I think is 3rd Gen with a 5600u which seems to fit the bill, wondering if there are alternatives.

So what would you buy her?

Any I3, 4GB will do that and more.

I recently bought:
  • 13.3 Inch Screen
  • Processor - Intel Core i3 7100U
  • RAM - 4 GB
  • SSD - 256GB
  • Operating System - Windows 10 Home
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Optical Drive - No optical drive
  • Colour - Grey
  • Battery Life - 7 hours
  • 1920 x 1080 Full HD Resolution
for one of the kids and came in at £330 brand new.

Second hand business laptop would indeed be viable option.
ThinkPads also have good keyboards for writing with also usefull arrow keys.
(most laptop keyboards have nowadays crappy tiny arrow keys)

You just have to spend some time in looking ones with good resolution screen.
If it isn't moved around, but is basically that easy to move out from table desktop replacement, then 15" screen size would be good and 14" definite minimum.

HP 255 G7 is fantastic for £350, Ryzen 3, 8gb DDR4, 256gb SSD and a decent 1080p screen, not quite as good as ips but a whole lot better than most of the TN offerings on cheap laptops, its also really quick, well impressed with the Ryzen 3.

Oddly enough, this is what I ended up getting before seeing your reply, and she is over the moon with it. It also looks really smart, we're really pleased with it :)

Many thanks!
