So Sultan Hassanal is taking Brunei back to the stoning age.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-47769964

Brunei is introducing strict new Islamic laws that make anal sex and adultery offences punishable by stoning to death.

The new measures, that come into force on Wednesday, also cover a range of other crimes including punishment for theft by amputation.

I don't have much else to say other than the pun.

Extreme Islamic views are extreme.

A lot of celebs have been calling for the boycott of the hotels owned by the Brunei royal family.

The country has gotten rich from oil and gas exports, so surely whomever is buying up those oil/gas reserves could apply a lot of pressure to revert these extreme laws.

I did read as well that it should be hard to convict anyone of a homosexual act, as it requires admission on behalf of all parties involved, and at least 4 witnesses. So extreme law is basically saying don't get caught, and definitely don't admit what you've done.

I think the amputation on theft might be more easier for the state to dish out as a punishment.

There's fairly wide spread support for stoning as punishment in a lot of Islamic countries in the Middle East, large percentages of the population think Sharia should be the law of the land, and stoning is one of the punishments. To call it an Islamic extremist view would only be extreme perhaps in the West.

Backwards religion/culture is backwards?

I’m not sure about the boycott by celebs, granted it is a reasonable thing to object to and take action over but this isn’t exactly the only country that hates homosexuality and has ridiculous laws based on what they think some magical sky pixie wants them to do. There are gulf states with sovereign wealth funds too and they’re arguably more oppressive.

Of course plenty of these celebs likely won’t be too interested in reducing their massive carbon footprint (fashionable hybrid or electric cars aside). But switching form one luxury hotel to another isn’t a big deal just let the min wage staff deal with the downturn in tips.

This is the reason why anyone who falls under the LGB moniker (and any woman who likes their equal rights for that matter) SHOULD be Islamophobic but I'm sure I'm just a far right Nazi for pointing that out.

Yup, in fact yet should hate conservative versions of all three Abrahamic religions. Islam does tend to be Conservative in general with very few exceptions.

IIRC there are some LGBT friendly mosques in Canada, Germany etc... if that takes off a bit then it is a potential solution. The few moderate/liberal Muslims in the media are frequently accused of being apostates or anti Islamic etc... ironically not just by fellow Muslims but also by others on the left - for example the Southern Poverty Law Centre vs Maajid Nawaz.

So the short term approach perhaps is to undermine the current conservative interpretations - this will take time. There is a bit more tolerance in Christianity these days, Islam is still rather backwards. Even telling kids in schools that gay people exist is controversial and can get an angry mob of pixie worshipers frothing at the school gates.

The long term solution of course is for humanity to ditch these stupid belief systems.

You're forgetting some of the bible stories from Sunday school of people getting stoned for adultery. ;)

Like the one where the supposed prophet of Christianity stops a stoning by a mob?

I don't think Christianity is quite so clear as other abarahamic religions when it comes to the punishment for 'sins' like homosexuality and adultery despite what some selectively clutching at the old testament may think.

Jesus explicitly provides a basis for the separation of church and state (and hence temporal punishment)

Which is completely differnt to Islam which is explicity political due to Sharia being a core part of the system.

The current list of counties where one can be executed for homosexual acts isn't a big surprise therefore

  • Afghanistan
  • Brunei: death by stoning for sex between men.
  • Iran
  • Mauritania, only applies to Muslim men
  • Sudan for a third conviction
  • Nigeria where several northern stateshave adopted sharia as the law of the land
  • Yemen
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Qatar applies only to Muslims, for extramarital-sex regardless of the gender of the participants
  • Somalia(Jubaland) where several southern states have adopted sharia law

We should be tolerant of the customs and norms of other cultures. It's not for us to judge them. And if they immigrate here, bringing with them their own culture to supplant ours, then that in my view is a good thing. After all, does the BBC need more old white men? We need better representation of other cultures and races.

Someone needs to tell him it's 2019 not 819. Then again maybe it is the dark ages on his calendar.
What a world.
