6 years without a Smart Phone

His YouTube page is an utter abortion. Just looks like hours and hours of boring opinionated drivel. Bet he's great at dinner parties.

Not sure I understand why you need to not get a smart phone to avoid social media - Just delete the relevant apps?

I stopped using Facebook about a year and a half ago by just deleting the app and shortcut in my browser - Easy peasy :p

well there is this, silent mode is an option.

It boggles the mind sometimes, at the pub I regularly see groups of people with their phones going 'ping' and checking them all the time. It happens at work too, even the exec members in meetings responding to their phone's notifications every few minutes, distracting them and the rest of the group.

You need not stop using the apps, just disable the notifications or use silent mode and you release the burden and ease the anxiety.

I don't get it, I have a smart phone and spend less than 30 minutes a day on it according to the usage app. You don't need to be glued to it 24/7.

Depends on how popular you are due to social media etc. The curse of today's technology, everyone expects you to be available 24/7.

Walking around town these days it's like The Walking Dead with people just glued to their smartphones, you see phone thefts on Crimestoppers and thieves just walk up to their victims, snatch the phone from their hand and before the victim has realised what has happened the thieves are 50 yards down the street and of course the phone user has never done anything in their lives so they wouldn't be able to catch them if they tried anyway.

It's no wonder so many youths today have difficulty in the real world and have a need for safe spaces and trigger warnings and censoring speech, the normal for them is the online world where corporate rules reign supreme and they're so used to the bubble that they're trying to extend it into the real world.

On a related note, try to banish all news outlets too. It's been great for me!

My friend has recently started doing this and he recommends it also - He doesn't like that most news is usually bad news :p

But I'm not sure I could give it up - I like to be in the know :p

I was going to comment on this before. I tend to agree reading article after article of bad news is probably not good for ones mental health, but equally, I don't really feel like I want to be totally oblivious to everything going on either. The trick for me is using an app that lets you create your own specialised feeds, and I quit publications like the daily mail altogether (which definitely HAS been a good thing).

Smart phones are great,

Maps - Awesome.
Translate - Awesome
Calculator - Awesome (for that annoying person who only pays exactly what they spent at a large dinner outing)

Social media is for fools and teenagers.

as others have said, smartphones do more than serve as pipes to fill your life with media and facebook dross.

i have never had the facebook app installed on any of my phones longer than the 2 minutes it takes to find the options menu and uninstall it when the phone's new.

music and video, translation, gps navigation, calculators, unit converters, i've even seen some cool apps for measurement (probably not accurate but definately neat and handier than carrying a tape all the time), photo and video capability, banking as well as being able to use whatever communication app of choice (be it whatsapp, discord, skype or just plain ol' sms) however are all very useful.

I couldn't be without a smartphone they're just too useful in everyday life, it tells me if there's traffic on my route to work without having to go to a PC and check for example. I can check that i got paid correctly with my banking app while walking to the car in 10 seconds, i can take a very high quality picture or video of anything within 2 seconds as it's always in my pocket.

Then there's things like tickets mostly now being via email or an app which makes life so much easier than having to faff and remember to bring a paper ticket to an event or a train journey etc.

There's literally no downsides unless you choose to make them yourself, if you choose to install apps which make you unhappy there's clearly a very easy solution to just remove said app and then return to it being just an incredibly useful tool.

There is a special circle in hell reserved for people who use cartoon avatars of themselves as their online avatar.

OI!

Tracking, privacy. This is the downside as far as I'm concerned.
