20 million PC gamers could defect from PCs to consoles by 2022

When the PS5 is released I'll jump ship from pc gaming. I've a very modest setup that is showing its age and needs an update , but the price of components is utterly ridiculous.

I'm very interested in the mouse/keyboard support that may be coming to consoles but one thing that I struggle with is the £60 price tag on new games.

optical drives are one of the most perishable components in a console.

Can't say I've ever had that issue.

On release yes but most trickle down quickly on sales unless it is really popular ones like BLOPS4 etc.

as the boxes under your tv get more powerful it will be easier to just get the one box that does all. it will happen at some point. all tv channels all games all everything in one small box. its just putting the package together to do that. simplfying everything.
I’ll say this’ll happen in... never.

Netflix are the biggest IPTV provider (excluding sky go) and even they can’t get live sport.

Sky might release something that can run the odd game but I can’t seem them taking it seriously enough to release a console because that’s not their core market.

If anyone could do it and have a shot at it working, it’d be Apple imo. This still relies on them getting live sport deals but then they have the games catalog to go, but it’s a long way out. They tried with Apple TV and the content providers didn’t want them to get a monopoly and threw their toys out.

Sky and virgin already include Netflix in their boxes though, although sky is limited to Q boxes.

i think it was either dreamcast or saturns where the typical failure point was the optical drive. the drive in my old xbox is temperamental.

other than massive design flaws like the XBOX power supply recall and red ring issues, long term the moving parts or capacitors will be typical failure points. sockets as well if strain relief is absent.

What's going on with the whole Intel GPU thing? They've got one of the largest R&D budgets on the face of the earth, shirley a company like that wouldn't be spunking billions on this tech unless they're certain there's a future in it?
It's not just about PC gaming though, it's about the datacentre, machine learning and AI too.

Yes but I can't see them a) releasing a console and b) having a library of games big enough for people to ditch their PC/Xbox

They don't necessarily need to release a console though, a cloud based subscription model could be pursued as per Stadia or xCloud.

The library is obviously an issue, perhaps in terms of library/rights management they could look to team up with an existing distribution platform, they provide the cloud computing service and the distributor shares in licensing revenue or alternatively they might look to build up their own.

It could potentially be an attractive option for some parents/households to not shell out the up front cost to buy the latest console for the kids and stick it under the TV etc.. but instead just buy the Netflix or Sky entertainment package that allows access to the latest games etc...

It won’t be over £500 I’m absolutely sure of it. £450-500 is the most that they’ll ask for a console for at least one more generation. We’re still talking about a sector that includes children and teens as a huge customer base.

I remember spending £550 on a launch bundle for the PS3.
Stupid amount of money to spend on a console, plus you then have to wait for ages for some decent games to be released.

thats because iirc. nobody was selling them on their own. everyone who had stock had them in bundle form only. so if you wanted the console you had to buy £150 worth of extras on top too.

I remember buying a bundle because it was the only way to get the console at the time.

Yeah, no point quoting bundle costs. The PS3 itself was about £425 I think. More expensive than the PS4 but then I don’t think the credit crunch had really hit when the PS3 was released and there was a bit more disposable income and credit around. I know credit card companies were throwing them at me around that time. Think I actually bought mine on an HSBC 0% purchase card.

Yep. £425. I remember paying cash for that with the money I had earned working either labouring or my first Christmas temp job at Argos. Paid for the thing in cash and got home with just the console as I couldn't afford a game! My mum felt bad and popped to Woolworths(!!) and got me Resistance Fall of Man.

Paying for that really hurt but I felt a little bit smug walking out with a box on release day (even without a game!!)

Ha yep, saving up for ages and then seeing it all go was quite painful but guess we are all suckers for new tech / toys.

It was a bundle price (2 games and an extra controller I think) but as you say a new console without any games is pretty useless.
