I am actually in a similar position to you op (apart from being a cyclist). There doesn't seem to be smart shorts with deep pockets, and obviously no man should ever wear denim shorts. I'm going to have a look round next on Friday and see if they have any.

I’ll watch out for it, presumably someone looking like a dork in denim shorts, but maybe it suits the advertiser to have a dork in denim shorts in the commercial for his product.

I'm in the same situation as you and incidentally wearing the above shorts for that reason. They are short shorts, breathable, have zips pockets, and best of all, elastic waist! So comfortable to wear however they do not look smart at all. I continue my search every day in the hope of one day finding a pair of casual shorts that have good features.
