im getting a 1.8m worktop for a new desk and want an RGB strip along the beck of it for some nice LED lighting, I find it very confusing though. What do I need to achieve this at a reasonable cost? Some of the Philips hue stuff is good but the price is eye watering. Really want to pay around £20-30 if possible.

Have a look in Ikea. They sell some modular kits that will do the job for a reasonable cost.

unless you want it to be controlled by your pc i'd just go have a google for RBG light strip and buy what ever suited. 20-30 quid will be more than enough and may even get you a remote for the lights - unless you specifically want the likes of the hue stuff.

If you want smart home type stuff, you can get controllers that sync with Google/Alexa via WiFi for about £10-15. Come with a few strips and a main controller usually. I imagine the strips might fade or die eventually but it's a good way to try it out. The controller will likely last longer.

Amazon/Ebay for a cheap chinese knockoff imitation product.

I grabbed a LIFX Z for the back of my TV (bias lighting) and it's extremely bright, controllable from PC/phone and does all the colours of the rainbow + 3!

Sadly this is the classic 'choose 2' dilemma. Cheap, Bright, Good - go ahead! :)

I just grabbed one from Amazon which can be controlled by an app.

Think it was £15-£20 and works fine.

Depends on wether you’re going to be adding more lights to an “ecosystem,” if so then you’ll want to get something compatible with all your other lights so you can control them all from one place and create scenes etc.
