2019 Chilli Growing thread

Are they getting a decent amount of direct sunlight? They look like they're reaching for the light and getting a bit leggy. Depending on the size of the final pots you could remove a few of the lower leaves and bury some of the stem.

someone gave me seeds here they never grew
still waiting for them to grow in the greenhouse

otherwise I have 4/5 chilli plants

btw my old plants never survived the winter in the greenhouse, so I threw them all out and reused the pots.

Me too :D

It definitely works for Tomatoes as they have the ability to grow new roots all along their stem.
Fair enough! I reckon it would be worth it just to keep the plant more stable if nothing else. Someone on a chilli group on facebook recommended I did it with mine which were leggy.

Chilli focus has a weaker dilution rate for seedling/young plant stage.

Good shout!

Garden looks like it will have the space. They do a few different sizes of those greenhouses I linked too.

It's pretty solid to be fair! I initially built it and emailed them straight away saying the shelves (mesh) are flexing with just the weight of my hand but they responded back pretty quick saying it is rated to 20KG per shelf. And the cable ties to hold the mesh (which I still haven't fitted) make it even stronger. So sure enough I loaded it up with 10l pots which all together way a fair amount... and it's fine!

Bought three plants today (2x jalapeno, 1 habanero) and have housed them in decent pots, probably a bit overkill for their current size but hopefully they'll grow into them. Not looking forward to the almost guaranteed aphid predicament, how do you all deal with them Neem oil, soap, ladybirds etc? First two are doable but ladybirds i think will just disappear if i order any since i don't have a greenhouse!

Last time i grew chillis from seed was 2013, only decided a few weeks ago to grow some this year, so to late for planting seeds, so has to buy my plug plants, i do have one bought chilli plant from last year that i overwintered, Habanero Burkina Yellow, its the big one in its own pot at back of polly tunnel, others that im growing in self watering quad grows and chilli grows are, Hungarian hot wax, Cherry bomb, Ali lemon drop, Habanero paper lantern, Fatalii x 2, Cayennetta.

Haha yeh, i down worry about the grass, as our house was just built on fields in the 60's, so i just cut it down every 2 weeks to the soil and thats the care it gets :) i am just thinking of what else to fill the top right of the tunnel with, dont think more chillis thou.

Can over watering cause a shriveled droopy appearance?

Grown three types from seed, two look big and strong, third are slightly smaller and suddenly looking a bit sad. They're out in my little greenhouse which is temperature controlled. Watering daily but wondering if thats too much?

Try and get some picture tomorrow.

Daily? I water mine once a week at max.

I normally water with around 200ml of water. then again when they start to droop which is usually after a week.

daily is going to kill them.

you want to water them good in one go (200ml) then leave them be until the leaves start to droop.

I repotted mine a few weeks ago and haven't even watered them once yet. The idea being that the roots will works their way into all the available compost instead of just the bottom where the water is. There are roots showing at the bottom already after going from a 1L to a 3L pot so the roots have been busy. I think 3L will be the final size this year as the 5L pots take up too much room.

As an experiment I used some of my home made compost from the compost bin in one of the pots, just to see if it makes any difference over the shop bought stuff. So far I have had to pull a tomato/pepper seedling out every other day lol. The seeds from kitchen scraps mustn't be affected by the composting process.

what i did was when going to a bigger pot. stick some compost in about 1-2 inches worth. then put in fertiliser. then put 8-10 inches of compost then the smallish plant.

that way when it works it way down it will get the feed.

a tip for growing outdoors was dig a big hole. then dig an additional 4-6 inches. stick a whole fish in the bottom. fill it up then plant on top.

that way the fish will provide nutrients over time as it decomposes.

My dog would approve of that method.. Although there would be bits of fish and chilli plant all over the garden after about a minute. :D

Will do. Thanks. First time growing these everything else I have needs watering daily.

the weather has gotten much hotter now up here. So I'm watering with 200ml every 3 days now.

i just glance at mine and look at the leaves. if they are erect they are fine. drooping then water needed.

little is best as you can't remove excess water. but if need be you can always add more water. mine are in pots with no drainage.
