It genuinely astounds me that anyone - excepting the Crown Prince of Saudi Oil Plc - would spend £1500 on a GPU. Any GPU.
I can't fathom how such a thing is even possible.
In a professional capacity, such as a Quadro card, I can understand a costly gpu has its benefits/requirements. But, I agree with your sentiment regarding these gaming cards - paying 2-3 x the rest of the computer cost, just for the gpu, and only to play games... the world is crazy...
I remember wincing at the cost of a Voodoo 2 (£120) in 1998, just for fancy 3d graphics... I also had to think long and hard before paying for my 980ti, which i think was about £500. I have the disposible to buy a 2080ti, but I just can't justify half the cost for a gpu...
In some respects I cant work out the target demographic for these cards... Who has this level of disposable income for a gpu for gaming?!? Sure there are exceptions, but for the norm, who can afford these cards? Students (and for a few years after graduation) are too riddled with debt, so they’re ruled out. So, I can only guess it’s the 30-45 yr olds? Who probably aren’t the biggest of gamers, but almost wistfully wished they still were. Finally have some decent disposable cash so want to treat themselves for the odd game one night in the week? So, how many of these cards are sat in pcs barely doing a % of their ability?
Or, is this just credit nation, and people chucking them on a loan without considering the value of the price…
