Basic Laptop

Pretty much anything at that price point with an SSD and an i3/i5 will be fine. They'll all be much the sake to be honest.

Edit: 8gb ram ideally too.

Yes.
Pretty much all the recovery stuff i do for folk i work with is because they have been stupid enough to store all there important pictures and files on a crap 5400 rpm 2.5" hdd on a laptop that gets knocked about - cant tell these idiots..
Use the cloud to store stuff, get an SSD as a laptop hard disk is slow... very very slow.

One thing I forgot to add is that I found a few laptops with just an SSD, and honestly she saves stuff a lot of the time and just uses up a lot of data in general, from pictures to movies whatever and a larger capacity is needed. All the laptops I found with SSD's in that price range only had 128 storage which is not enough IMO.

Or should I just get one with an SSD and just use a USB/Cloud for other stuff?

If it comes with a 128gb ssd see if the laptop has a nvme slot. It so, you can put a 1TB NVMe drive. Or you can also swap the 128gb drive for a 1TB normal SSD and that will work just fine.

I wont reccommend the cloud as much since it costs money annually and adds up over time. Better to get a 1TB SSD.
