It's too hot :(

I bought a Dyson air purifier thingy earlier this week and it's rubbish, no better at cooling the bedroom than a conventional fan.

Decided to get the early train today, not looking forward to the journey home though :(

No point buying one now. It'll be raining again by the time you get it up and running. :p

I'm going to look into getting one for next year though, maybe even a proper one installed, buy it in the winter when its half the price.

Screwfix sell a 12,000 one for £299 but all out of stock

Currys is the logix one (unsure if its any good)......

This one looks good though

We have the predecessor to this, it's very good. However, it is not nearly as good as the proper split system elsewhere in the house. This is my little process that I follow to get the bedroom ready:
1) Use a Prem-I-Air High Velocity Air Circulator Fan to get the room less stuffy, normally 30 minutes does the trick. This step is key, without doing it the A/C is crap.
2) Shut all windows and then plug in the portable A/C and let it go to work for about 45 minutes.
3) Walk into a room that is significantly colder than the rest of the house.
4)????
5) Get a good nights sleep.

I'm lucky I suppose, I can go to sleep easily regardless of how hot* or cold it is, and get a good nights sleep.

Makes all this talk of needing AC to help sleep slightly baffling to me, but I guess we're all different. :)

*Only exception to that was when on holiday in Kalymnos in the late eighties when Greece had a heateave on. A British woman died from it the week after we left the island.

It got to around 114F in the sun duriing the day and in the nineties at night.
I can still remember waking up in the middle of the night, straight onto autopilot to the fridge to down a pint of water.

I thought the same thing last year, but prices remained unchanged.

Also major problem with many of the air cons are they are very poor overall (no surprise) and you will really need to do a bit of research in to each one to find out if it's any good or not.

Where do you vent the hot air? out the window or have you drilled a big hole in the wall?

Approaching 32C at Heathrow already, which is higher at the same time as when the record was set in 2003.

Thunderstorms have already bubbled up over France though, so if these hit us the temperatures will be held back in those areas

Already been out and cycled 21 miles. Even though it's apparently 31°C, I didn't really feel it while cycling. Now back in my air conditioned room until it's time for work...

I bought one of these last year, £299 plus VAT, awesome, think I'd rather buy an A/C unit from an A/C specialist. The sleep function is the best bit, it slows the output and reduces the noise till it eventually turns off hours later.

Wow that is mobile :D

Our "mobile" AC unit weights a ton, needs 2 people to get it upstairs so I never bother. It's quite an old unit though so the noise is too much for the bedroom plus they use a lot of power to be left on all night, it is a nice treat for days like today though.

I have a sheet of acrylic/perspex stuff that is attached to the window with velcro, which has a hole and a fitting for the extractor pipe, so the window is sealed and the air can escape.

Portable units are flawed by the fact that they extract air, so always draw in air from somewhere else. But they still do a good enough job. My bedroom yesterday was 28c when I got home. 9000BTU portable A/C kept it at 20c all night, plus the lower humidity makes it so much more comfortable.

It's got a long hose, just literally bung it out the window and job done. Close the window to clamp the end of the hose to stop it potentially falling back into the room and filling it with hot exhaust air. All these A/C units from Currys, Argos etc are total junk. The ones Climachill sell are actually decent. We've had ours 3 years, it just works....Even after being stored for 8 months.
