I saw this on instagram and twitter about 4 days ago and it appears no one was covering it. It had been burning for over 2 weeks at that point at a record rate.
It seems only now, since DiCaprio and a couple of celebs starting posting about it, that the news outlets are bothering to cover it...

That rainforest produces a 5th of all oxygen the world has, you'd think it'd be a bigger deal?

Sadly we take oxygen for granted, but agreed it needs greater coverage and something done about it.

Trump/Brexit gets more clicks...

Also, googling Amazon Fire gets you more links to tablets than news stories, doh!

Similar to other regions of the earth where entire forests are burnt to make room for grazing and agriculture.
I am unsure how much O2 is made by crops, but one would think it is less than forestation affords.

The lack of exposure of this is sad, where are all the condescending climate change and my planet people at?

People just don't care. There are two threads in GD, both started at roughly the same time on the same day. One has over 70 posts. This is post #6 in the other one.

One of them is for people to talk about themselves.
This one is to discuss a pretty important event on our planet which could affect every single one of us in some way.

I'll let you guess which has more posts.

It's because it's my thread mate ;)

It shows really how all of this stuff is controlled so much by the "powers that be" at the top. We're so badly told what to care about and what not to...

as I've said before....nobody really cares about the planet (not enough anyway) and this is actually good for the planet. If we destroy the earth to the point we become extinct, hopefully over thousands of years the planet will repair itself. It will be far better off at that point without man-woman-kind.

Sadly we are all doomed

And only have ourselves to blame.
Nothing will stop it as we are all greedy and short sighted.we are at point where we need technology to save us. Something that hasn't been developed.

This is just another thing on list.
Worst thing is we are all contributing Even the people who care. I haven't met many people (even strong eco people) who will give up jetsetting holidays.

If people who care can't make the sacrifices. We haven't got a chance

This along with Siberia burning to a fine crisp pretty much means we should be expecting runaway Gigatonne level of increases in the not distant future.

It isn't only the oxygen. The tropical rainforest is the home to many unique animal and vegetation species. Some of the tallest trees on Earth, too.

Conservationists have blamed Mr Bolsonaro for the Amazon's plight, saying he has encouraged loggers and farmers to clear the land, and scientists say the rainforest has suffered losses at an accelerated rate since he took office in January.

Why do they burn it all but not use the material for paper production, timber, etc? ? ?

Conspiracy theorists say that Hard Brexit leavers set fire the jungle to distract from Brexit. Or Trump supporters. President of Brazil has even got in on the act and is blaming climate change protesters for starting the fires to show that Brazil can't be trusted to look after the Amazon.
