Anyone stocking up on canned food etc.. Brexit?

Broccoli production in 2018 was down 20% due to the weather not Brexit

And the supply chain was unable to meet the shortfall from elsewhere.

Hence using this as an example for how any disruption from Brexit can't simply be fixed by 'just get it from somewhere else'. Supply chains are highly complex. There isn't just loads of stuff sitting in warehouses waiting for loads of spare trucks, boats and aircraft waiting to ship them to distribution hubs that are sitting around idle waiting to move them to empty warehouses for picking and restocking.

Good point just as well for the UK to diversify its supply chains to include more sources from outside of the rather restrictive European food market?

Perhaps by being slightly less reliant on trucked goods from the continent what with the French penchant for industrial action which we are susceptible to the negative affects of both in and out of the EU.

Yes, that would be good, in a planned way.

The terrible way to do it would be to cut off or reduce access to the majority of our existing suppliers, and then beginning to negotiate with new ones while we are absolutely desperate for their product.

The USA says hello.

There are supply chains, then there are politically motivated supply chains to look good with lots of poo covered string attached. We aren't getting the former.

Trading for beans with whisky, is not going to occur. Trading for beans and banning Huawei and China will however be on the cards.

Blame the intransigence of the EU and the stalling and undermining tactics of plenty of our domestic politicians for the situation the UK is in where we may have to leave the EU rather abruptly.

The US is fine. Quite happy to visit the country and eat their food and happy to eat food that's imported from the US to UK aswell

You do realise the UK largely moved away from a bartering economy centuries ago? We don't trade Whisky for beans or anything else... companies that make whisky sell it in the domestic and international markets for money.

For the latter its just a matter of tariffs that are the subject of trade deals.

Personally I would be quite happy for Huawei to be removed from contention for supplying the core secure telecommunications hardware for the UK if it means we maintain our ties with our longstanding military/ intel partners

Stock up on food? No, what's the point?

Apparently half of us are going to drop dead the second Brexit becomes reality.

Followed by a plague of locusts, meteor storms, the oceans boiling, and Nicholas Cage being required to star in every new movie.

So yeah, what's the point.

The point would be that even if you believe all will be alright (which frankly is laughable) to brace that inital bump in the supply chain from the inevitable chaos across trade routes.

Your choice and I hope you are wrong but like I have said, living in rural areas we can quite often have periods without food and food shortages so its something we are used to. We always try to have up to months worth of food in the house, leading up to 31st October we will make sure we are fully stocked. It would be total stupiditiy not to and to rely on the words of BJ and others that we can live on Sovereignty and there will be food in the shops if we just "believe" enough

Clearly haven't lived in a village cut off by ice and snow before, and that's without supply issues based on politics.

One can only hope that this winter is mild.

Those people will who suffer supply issues when the winter isn't mild will already be prepared for that scenario, Brexit or otherwise.

WWII not with standing, can somebody actually tell me about a time in the U.K. where people might have actually needed a months supply of food at home to avoid starving???

We're Leaving the E.U not the planet. Granted, the odd seasonal produce might not be available for a short time out of season whilst things settle down, rather like the norm for when I was a kid.

Somewhat an element of chicken little in this thread.

Anyway, there will be a deal at the 11th hour and it will be all hugs and smiles. There you go, I've called it.
