I'm not planning for the electricity cutting out,
not so far fetched - you forgot to read the memo that France could raise the prices, on Christmas day say.

CRE had previously said that it was preparing a mechanism which would allow continuity in day-ahead electricity auctions between Britain and France in case there is no deal for Britain to leave the European Union on March 29.
CRE said that in the absence of a postponement of the date of Britain’s withdrawal, or the signing of a withdrawal agreement by that date, European legislation, particularly regulation governing the allocation of power capacity, would no longer apply to the United Kingdom from March 30.
etc

I recommend you all join this group on Facebook called "the 48% preppers".

There's some real gems in there:

I asked this in another group, but I suspect more members here will have thought about it.

If we import 30% to 40% of our electricity in a year, and we leave the EU without a deal at a time of year when our electricity usage is near to its peak, is that likely to affect electricity supplies? Is this likely to mean rolling blackouts until an appropriate deal is made?

I am seriously considering buying a generator that can run off red diesel or even cooking oil :)

^brilliant

Today I have done a stocktake......we are fine for the basics, tea, pasta, rice, flour, tins, soup, sauces and chocolate (very well hidden since last time).....but only one tin of custard, one bag of cashews, no crisps, no mayonnaise, no rice pudding, no mini steamed puddings, no bags of sweets and all the biscuits have gone! I'm going to put a lock on my Brexit cupboard. The sods have been raiding it and not telling me

Just been to Tesco’s to stock up on French wine. Shelves almost empty. Presuming they hadn’t stocked the shelves yet. I asked the assistant for a few boxes. Assistant replied ‘that’s the lot, we’re low on stock’!

^^these pair, how very middle class.

Guys im freaking out after todays announcement, im living on my own i have food prepped and ready but non-food items im struggling on and dont know how much to stock either and im on a limited budget now. Any help or advice I will be very grateful thank you!

Anyone noticing more american produce in the shops. Is it possible we are being drip fed american food so that if the the US deal happens we won't notice as much. Food related. Tried montery jack mini cheddars today, foul taste. I will stick with the cheddar ones.

Most people don't have a clue that our very small group of people are going through the process of preparing. Please accept that this if they are told will always involve some confusion amongst the masses and those few others But we/you/me/the cats/dog's and the hamster's that we feel responsible for will survive and be protected from the flood of misery. Because we have built an ark.
This message comes to you from a single gay man, so you're safe in assuming that no greater power will notice...

Sorry if it has been discussed before but is anyone getting Christmas presents in early? Am I worrying unnecessarily? I don’t want my 4 year old thinking Father Christmas has forgotten about him!

Just thinking for those who have corned beef ECT may be worth keeping an old key thing off one as they not easy to get out if opened with a tin opener

Absolute gold.

But wait, what's this!? Stocking your freezer full of loads of food for ages could actually be a bad idea you say? Noo!

Disaster! The freezer part of my fridge freezer has died. Everything will need to go out. Bit cross. DH will not get anyone out as he is an engineer, but he has no time to look yet. I am just nervous. My fuddled brain says get a chest freezer, put it into the lean to and use the bottom half of the fridge as ambient storage. Our kitchen is tiny. I'm feeling quite stressed about this.

WWII not with standing, can somebody actually tell me about a time in the U.K. where people might have actually needed a months supply of food at home to avoid starving???

We're Leaving the E.U not the planet. Granted, the odd seasonal produce might not be available for a short time out of season whilst things settle down, rather like the norm for when I was a kid.

Somewhat an element of chicken little in this thread.

Anyway, there will be a deal at the 11th hour and it will be all hugs and smiles. There you go, I've called it.

During the cold war, back in the 70's we were issued leaflets, school classes and public information TV ads on creating a nuclear bunker from tearing your home apart, using an oddly huge number of luggage bags to cushion falling debris and numerous food and sanitary items. We never prepared for it, my mum would rather of died than ripped the home apart for a shelter.

And the cans?

What about the cans? Do you think that because something is in a can and last for 5 years instead of 5 days it is immune from disruptions in the supply chain? That there are somehow magically loads of extra stock of cans, more than is required, just sitting around waiting for disruptive events like Brexit that they might take advantage of?

There's also the fact that people are expecting normality, IE not forced to eat canned foods/foods they don't actually enjoy. That will take some time to overcome for many people, who have enjoyed stability for so long. People will prioritise what they like first and foremost and coincidentally in the consumerist age, that is shared by the vast majority of people, not that everyone is so silly as to not start reprioritising, but there are a lot of entitled people in the country.

Nobody is going to jump over and fight over a can of beef, certainly not at the start.

Nail. Head.

@The_Abyss, I think you're just upset there is a chance you might not get your juicy avocado for a month or two.

Avocados I've seen recently tend to be from Mexico, so Tarquin will still have his smashed avo and poached egg on toast.

I don't think you are taking this seriously.....

Its all well and good being able to get hold of avocado's after the pending apocalypse but it's no good if it means there's no one available in Pret to sell you a chicken, avocado and basil sandwich to go with your coffee!

And whoose going to serve Tarquin his smashed avo and poached egg when you can't get hold of an Au pair for love or money?

Panic not my friend...
We have signed a pre-trade agreement with Israel, who just happen to be a huge producer of avocados.

Can't stand the things personally...

Easy for you to say when you dont have food shortages already every few years...

That's not the point I was making - the media exaggerate and lie to fuel fear and I think people need to stop consuming it because it directly affects society and laws now.

Problem is the whole capitalist economic model relies on us wanting to consume more and more. Do we need to replace out TV's and mobiles every year or two? No, not at all.

I guess they'll have to slum it and opt for one of the lower class commonwealth types, like an Australian. At nearly $2 to the £1 they can keep paying the slave labour rates they are used to.

We might have to eat less exotic foods and eat foods grown in the UK instead. I know this will be a shock to our precious classes, but it is achievable.

This kind of guff thread is usually confined to speakers corner hence the lol posts.

Surprised its still in gd tbh

Talking of which, when we leave the eu will we still be able to purchase Gucci belts and corner sofas?
