Hey all,

Been looking at possibly buying a used refurbished Imac (27" non Retina),clearly states that its had its Screen replaced and I asked him if it was a genuine panel and he said no,Which im happy hes honest about.

However, do you think this non genuine panel would be inferior to the genuine one? im not doing anything that would require the screen to be accurate like video editing or photo editing etc but would you guys tend to avoid non genuine panels?

thanks :)

Hi,i don't need to no,But I don't want one that's ancient,So ideally 2014 onwards,I think 5k came in 2015 models?

But not wanting to spend a ton either, was thinking £500,Some of them on the auction site are really overpriced for what specs they are imo.

5k arrived late 2014, and I reckon you could get one of those models for under £1,000. Mine's an i5 with an upgraded 2tb SSD and 32gb RAM and I don't reckon it is worth much more than that now.

But the older models - there should be plenty to choose from for around that budget. I don't know enough about possible 3rd party screen units, but given there's so many available for sale I'd avoid it.

Is there anywhere to check decent prices of these? there are quite a few around and tbh I never really know a bargain from a rip off!

trying to find a refurbished/used bargain but not sure on avg prices etc

I normally look for the specific model I want on eBay, and watch the listing or bid at a certain amount and see what they go for. I used to bid at the amount I'm prepared to pay, and that has caught be out a couple of times when I won two or three auctions within a few hours... That seems to be pretty much the only way to get a bargain on eBay these days though.

I personally wouldn't buy an iMac which had a non-genuine panel put in. The iMac panels are generally very good quality in terms of colour, and anything that isn't genuine may be off the mark ... there are plenty out there, so I'd personally look else where.

I used to have an older 2011 i7 model with an AMD card in it ... great machine, but I wouldn't personally recommend it as the AMD card from the time was prone to failure*, with no reasonable means of repair or upgrade to something else. So make sure its a later model nVidia GPU model that you get.

*the card's solder used to fail, and new replacements were not really available, nor were upgrades to alternative models. So once broken, the machine was borked to a certain extent .... unless you replaced it with an existing matching card ... which would be prone to the same failure as well further down the line.
