Explain: "to compliment Lukaku he used a metaphor that turned out to be racist"

The parts that you keep claiming he said that he didn't say. Either you're delusional enough to be hearing voices in your head or you're lying.

Clearly I know exactly what he said. I know that and you know I know that. I am changing the words to prove a point. He actually "He basically just ended it with". I was explaining what had gone before and why people were saying he was complementing him before he made a racist remark. I never denied what words he actually said.

So getting back on track to your original post before you spent three posts pulling me up on not using the original words, why are you defending him? Why do you think racism is acceptable when its done by somebody who is 80?

I think it was probably both.

A grudging compliment from someone who possibly isn't fond of/comfortable with black people.

You can compliment people you don't like, begrudgingly.

Like it or not, you have to acknowledge that he's 80, and grew up in different times.

I think there is some virtue in letting this drop, and not seeking to make the chap a social pariah. He's been fired. He's 80. You won't change him at that age.

And lastly I suppose it's possible he didn't even think what he said was racist. Again due to age, upbringing, different generation/era.

That looks like a defence of what he said tbh but it's too late to argue with you when you just insult people about reading comprehension. Perhaps you should make your written prose less prone to misunderstanding if you weren't defending him.

Don't think anyone else is having the issues understanding that you are, tbh.

Well since this whole thread is half made up of people having a go at people defending him and not having a go at the man himself and the other half is made up of people defending him, no I wouldn't say that.

Half the time people are just responding to what they hoped was said
Your main contribution to this thread has been challenging people about what extreme steps they'd like to take next regarding punishment, yet I've seen not one post which you could have been replying to.

So you count me as one of the defenders after I said basically that firing him should be the end of the matter, and that you can't really change people that old, who grew up in a totally different era.

I think you'll find that is a realist's explanation of what happened, rather then a defence of it or a justification for taking no action.

Again tho you'll just see what you want to see, as always.

Let's face it old Count Dooku (Liz's husband) makes similar gaffs 24/7. People don't bay for his blood.

Who is Count Dooku?

Clearly I know exactly what he said. I know that and you know I know that. I am changing the words to prove a point. [..]

So you're lying, not hallucinating. You know you're claiming he said things he didn't say - you acknowledge that you are changing the words to "prove" a point.

Using that method, anything is anything. I could, for example, claim that you said that you're an alien posting from inside Area 51 and you robbed 871 banks last weekend just for a laugh. Hey, I'm just "changing the words to prove a point". That's OK, isn't it?

EDIT: Oh, I just noticed you slipped in another accusation as if it was proven truth. I suppose I should address that too, just in case anyone believes you.

As I have already said:

I'm not defending it. I'm criticising a dishonest and hysterical reaction to it.

Also, the racism is in your interpretation. You have no idea of this person's thoughts or motives...and you don't care. He might be racist, he might not. You've decided you can read his mind and travel backwards in time to do so. On top of that, I haven't mentioned his age.

I'd ask you to address things people have actually said, but that would be pointless.

Let's be honest, none of you are trying to reach a consensus here; you all love arguing about something, anything. :D

There's something not quite right about people using another person's racial abuse to fuel their lust for neverending internet debates. The OP is a troll post.

Clearly you were defending him. I said its "basically like saying..." so clearly making it clear that wasnt the words he used. Why are you getting all hysterical and accusing me of lying or hallucinations?

All that is going in in this thread is people having a go at other posters like you defending the guy. Nobody is having a go at the guy, just the people posting their defence. And when we do we get called hysterical.

I would ask you to address the points made by people in this thread rather than call names but that clearly will be pointless while you are in this mindset that I used a synonym. Oh the shock and horror of using the English language to debate.

An 80 year old Italian commentator has been fired for comments about Romelu Lukaku (recently joined Inter Milan).

His comment:

Obviously racist and I cannot see how it was said any other way than offensively.

But then you have the Programme Director publicly condemning yet defending the old man:

I can't understand how that sentence could have been said without malice. Unlike the Danny Baker thing where it could have been either way, this seems blatant and I cannot fathom how it was simply "a metaphor that turned out to be racist".

Am I missing some context to the whole monkey thing where it can be said in a complimentary way?

What did Romelu Lukaku say about this?

So it turns out the guys partner and grandkids are black.
Haha oh my days :D

he appeared on another broadcaster, Telelombardia, to try and clear his name and set the record straight after “one of the worst days of my life”, citing his multicultural family.

Passirani said: “I am 80 years old.

“I have been in the world of football for 40 years, I have never received a disqualification for behaviour in any of the roles I have held, but I accept the decision made against me.

“I would like not to pass for a racist. My partner who has lived with me for 17 years is black, I have two little black nieces, my son’s daughters.

“I am not a racist and I believe I am an educated person in every respect.

“In my career I met so many black players and I never had any problems.

“A lot of people called me, I think I’m an educated person, but this unintended phrase made me very sad.

“I’m not a racist, I’d like to apologise to Lukaku in person, I wish I could meet him.

“I did not sleep tonight, today I could not eat, a lack of tact and education does not belong to my way of being.”

Stupid bugger.
