Thomas Cook

I'm not sure what the employers PAYE contribution is on top of the employees PAYE, but get that percentage, times by hmmmm maybe 25k average salary? Then times that by 20k staff.

It'll give you a rough idea.

One of our lads left a couple of months ago to work at Thomas Cook, at least he will have a job if he wants to return to us.

We deal direct with Thomas Cook at the airport for the few items they buy off us.

My wife's an independent travel agent.
She has a 40 person wedding booking with them going Tuesday, With people all over the UK. They've paid independently for flowers, make up, gosh all sorts that they may not get back.
Gutted for them. Everyone is already stopping answering phones to her when she's been trying to confirm things, or get updates abroad.

She has been keeping an eye on new flights, but their rocketing as you would aspect.

It does'nt look good - I suspect the axe will fall this weekend or monday at the latest. I really hope people who have booked with them can get the money back, but it's worth also remembering that 20,000 people are about to lose their jobs. Something it seems to me the Press have forgotten with all the dramatic stories of people stuck abroad.
This. I'm quite an optimistic person, but the whole situation is really worrying. Quite few chains collapsing, and it's way past the point we're one should worry only if the next purchase will be a 2080ti or a 2080 super. Hope whoever those clowns in charge do, or are planning to do, sort this out and those people find a better working market soon.

Does anyone know how long it would take to get your money back if they do go bust? I have 2 holidays booked with them, one to mexico on October 6th and another to Turkey next year.

Yep, i'm in a big predicament, I have flights booked through them for 4 weeks time to Florida, fortunately my lazy ass hasnt booked anything else yet so either need them to either go bust now or they get rescued with reassurance they will be operating for the next 2 months minimum :D

If it is only flights, will that be covered by ATOL?

The problem with places that are rescued is they don't normally last very long due to the reason it needed to be rescued in the first place..
Yes indeed, the sentiment is more for the staff facing redundancy rather than the reality of the position the business is in.

Hearing reports of holiday go’ers being held in hotels or refused rooms until they cough up with their own cash. What a really crappy thing to happen on holiday.

Also, I have no doubt that the banks have deliberately done this to save short term cash knowing it’ll be cheaper for the state bail out than allow the fallout. Cheeky.

The caring people wringing their hands about the 20,000 jobs will be the same people getting an Uber to the airport to catch their £19 flight to Barcelona with Ryanair, to stay in a hotel secured separately on booking.com.

Society has gone full retard.

Yes, we should forget about progress. Ditch all computers and bring back typewriters so that typists can get their jobs back while we're at it! How dare people have the tenacity to research and book their own holiday they want, rather than let someone sat behind a desk in a shop do it for them based on only what their own company sell.

On a serious note, it is sad that they will probably close down. But who ever uses travel agents these days and why would you? Online package holidays I can understand, especially for families, but you can do this all from the comfort of your own home now, comparing different companies without being pressurised into taking a quick 'deal' while in a single shop.
