Upgrade? CPU? i9?

My current system -

i7 4770k @ 4.5Ghz
16Gb Ram
1080Ti

The CPU is certainly starting to struggle on some games like Planet Coaster, AC Origins, The Universim, X4 Foundations etc.

Is it worth upgrading the CPU, motherboard, Ram? Wait? What kind of options are there currently? Budget irrelevant, but would still like decent bang to buck.

Oh, and I can't be faffed with overclocking anymore, but do have space for a triple radiator. So either a strong stock CPU I guess or one pre-overclocked by OcUK?

AC will be the spanner in the works - coded well to use lots of cores .

Ryzen still needs to sort out their Boost speeds as no where near what they stated in some cases , intel you just enable MCE on z390 boards can should hit 4.9ghz all cores.

9700k is the pure gamers choice if you dont mind cash ! and either game at 1080p 144hz+ or what highest min frame rate going 1440p+

I upgraded from the 6600K @ 4.5GHZ to the 9700K @ stock, and the difference was noticeable. Paired with 32GB of RAM, and a 1080Ti, it should hold me over for at least 5 minutes, until I get the upgrade itch again! :p

9700k is about 15-23 fps faster then 3700x at 1080p , and thats using 2080. AC:Odd

funny enough, disable SMT and cuts it down to 10 fps slower

1440p thats about 5-7 fps difference

rest favour intel

The 9700k seems like a popular choice.

Was thinking of something like this...

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £741.44 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Would I be better off with an i9? or are the gains marginal? CPU cooling options? Stock? Whats a good cooler?

have a look for

sabrent rocket 1tb nvme = £105 and is NVMe 3.0 and a lot better then the samsung drive for the same price

9700k- £357
Z390 Gaming X - £132.95
3600hz Corsair - £76
Rocket 1tb - £106

total = 671.85 and then £30 odd for cooler and £700 all in

other option is 3700x + b450 msi max + 3200hz ram + rocket and cooler above :) would work out about £50 cheaper odd

Very helpful, thanks :)

Just need to ponder this now.

I also realised that I might need a windows 10 usb. I guess I’ve always installed and upgraded from an old copy, but have no dvd drive anymore.

Edit: I guess I just need to make a bootable usb. I am so rusty! I must have one somewhere.

If your chaging the board and processor then do yourself a favour and move over to zen2.

Why Zen 2... 75% of the games OP has listed wouldn't be much faster then his i7 clocked at 4.5ghz... they are Dual core Games at most ..

It's a shame ryzen 3700 prices have been creeping up :/ also that AMD haven't sorted out boost speeds yet . Here's hoping 4.6ghz is hit with 3950x

This was a really helpful post. Thanks @orbitalwalsh

I'm going to take the plunge. Just need to make a Windows 10 boot USB and sort out all my HDDs and SSDs.

Just need to think about selling all the old stuff then (and finding the boxes!).

no worries. size up ryzen 3700 with games you play etc and needs - future GPU upgrades. If i has any info on 10th core I would have shared but not pushing as much these days , though can say expect 10 core to come right bang on ryzen 3950x heels price wise but dont think thats your aim :)

Being a bit slow and just realising - can I put my H100i back on there? If the 4770k is socket 1150 and the 9770k is 1151 then the mounting requirement should be the same?
