A 'shy and awkward' student is facing jail after he touched a teenager 'in an attempt to befriend her.'

Jamie Griffiths, 19, Googled 'how to make a friend' then came into contact with the 17-year-old during two attempts to engage her in conversation.

The victim burst into tears during the second encounter and went to police with her mother, claiming Griffiths 'would have touched her breast had she not moved away'.

She claimed her school work suffered as a result of the contact, leaving her unable to sit her mock exams and apply to Oxford University.

Griffiths, who lives with his parents and now studies at Durham University, denied two charges of sexual assault, claiming he was 'shy, anxious and awkward'.

He said he had 'clumsily' approached the girl in an attempt 'to make a friend but the words didn't come out.'

Griffiths was convicted at Manchester Magistrates' Court and will be sentenced later this month. The offence carries a maximum sentence of ten years jail if dealt with at a crown court and he faces being ordered to sign the Sex Offender Register.

I mean there is awkward and then there is touching a girls arm becoming so awkward that she ends up gong to the police...

This must have been a worse approach than that poster recently who uploaded himself cycling up to women with a helmet cam on and telling them they looked fun etc...

I get the guy was a bit shy etc.. but this was the second attempt - and apparently the "words didn't come out" so he's just grabbed at her/touched her anyway.... even after being rejected previously. Doesn't really matter if you're shy/awkward, that was turning into harassment right away.

:p I often get lost for words when speaking to women but ive not done this tactic before, I know their curves and bumps can be tempting but its a no go :p

I'm surprised he got charged as the touching needs to be sexual in intent and nature and he has claimed it was an attempt to build rapport. He needs a better defence solicitor. His Google searches (which were obviously checked from his seized phone) suggests he isn't some perv.

I doubt he will get sent down and the girl claiming having her arm touched has ruined her life needs to get some perspective.

Remember lads unless in the top 20 % of men in attractive looks and wealth, you do not have the right to talk to any women...

Unless something is being left out this seems like a trail for trail sake, just to get the numbers up of reported female crimes to court up.

I feel sorry for him and yet I don’t. Hmm.

I mean... it’s pretty easy to avoid being referred to the police when making conversation.

Maybe I’m one of the top 20%?
