The ban was public news just like this afaik
This isnt the only clever source of energy possible, there was a coal bed under the sea available for energy extraction via a chemical process rather then removing the coal itself. The biggest failure here is Scotland blocks fracking but has the widest unoccupied areas and highest chance of energy available without causing any problem to people. If Scotland ever wanted to be viable in independence it would have to be via a lot of energy production probably.
I dont think there is much of a choice for UK to use its oil and gas rather then exporting the problem to foreign countries to sell us energy. My ideal would be to utilise all the hydro and tidal power we have but that too is blocked. If the only available fracking gas is in highly populated areas seems like its unlikely to proceed until prices are so high that the benefits appear worth the risk of low level earthquakes. This is just an electioneering stunt. The Tories have not banned fracking; they have called a moratorium; if they win the election they will allow fracking again.
