Hit and run got a car cam vid can anyone do a deblur on the reg plate.

Hi all,

Just read that there is de blurring software and was wondering if anyone can help out.

The mother in law was involved in a hit and run last night she has camera footage unfortantly it was dark not much street light and i just cant make out the reg plate, tried slowing it down on vlc but it just looks blured, is there anyone out there that could please assit in this sitution.

The dude comes onto her side of the road crashes and drives off

I'm sorry for what's happened and I hope she's OK but I expect this is only possible if you live in CSI land on the telly. You can't add data that doesn't exist.

This is what they do with astronomy photos, isn't it? They ensure the bit they want is centred then layer the pictures, right?

You probably can't easily de blur it, but go through the footage one frame at a time with VLC and screencap (I think VLC uses PNG so it retains full detail from the frame) every frame then go through them, you might be able to get most of the plate by looking at the individual frames one at a time or a couple side by side (possibly print out the relevant parts of the pictures) so you can compare them.

Hi all, cheers seen some youtube vids how they sort it looks impressive i am confident they can do it, just on the off chance some techy on here has got the correct software, it was just out the way of a built up area it was actually a main road away from houses.

There very lucky this could have gone bad very bad.

I see what you mean i am guessing this is how the software works, will keep trying my best and thanks for the info.

One thing to come out of this is dont get a cheap dash cam if you want it to work at night time.

Aye that was one of the things that decided what cam to get for our car, it does pretty well at night even on unlit roads when in motion.

I think its only possible to de-blur something that as been blurred on purpose. But not something that as been blurred naturally.

I'd do what @Werewolf suggests. I remember trying to make an animated picture using vlc and remember there is a setting to get vlc to post frame by frame shots (which I used to animate together using another program). So have an experiment with vlc. Hopefully you get lucky and in one frame it'll be visible.

Usually if you can see the make/model and part of the registration thats usually good enough for the police to be able to narrow it down.

Silly questions, but one should always ask what seems obvious...

I assume you're going along one frame at a time? Pause the vid and then press E to Frame Advance, in case you didn't know.
Also, have you tried playing around with all the settings, like brightness, contrast and all that? Might catch a frame where it can be enhanced enough to make out the reg.

give us a screen shot if you got 90% of the number plate you can put it into the car tax website and find a match to the car by guessing the remainder.

Agreed. I'd only get involved in CSI-ing the whole thing if your insurance company aren't giving you the outcome you want.

i did it with this after my uncle snapped a dozen pictures of Saturn that were pretty messy. Might not look very detailed but it's a damn lot better than it was originally.

We did it with Andromeda too.

there are also some other methods that can be used in direct relation to number plates with sharpening systems. I would love to give it a go if you can send me 10 or so frames with the reg in view. Can't promise anything but will be more than happy to try. @clubb699
