Touch screens, here to stay?

You dont have to have touch screens to declutter. I have physical buttons for the few things that seem to make sense, rear demist. Heating controls in the vents themselves, then I have the ability to adjust most from steering wheel controls and also have a central (so in theory passenger could use it) "knob" to use which will mimick most of the controls.
I have a basic (allows volume adjust ect) single knob that the passenger can use to adjust the stereo.
Not a single touchscreen.

My only minor criticism is that unless your constantly using some functions it can be difficult to remember which combination to use, is it right or left scroll wheels etc. But the theory of virtually everything being controlled that way, perfect thanks.

My other halves new BMW has a touchscreen and it annoys me to hell, its covered in smears, the coating isnt bad it helps to reduce the smears reflection, but constantly looks messy to me. The only thing I think the touchscreen does more seamlessly than the controlled is zooming in or out, just feels more natural now. Personally I would make it that they should only allow touch functionality when stationary, that would stop them putting controls you may need when moving on the touchscreen

Not sure what the "Ford Firefox" is? The voice that responds sounds a bit like a slightly relaxed Margaret Thatcher but she does understand a bit of Yorkshire. I don't think I could do without some form of voice control in my future vehicles & certainly do not want to have to be messing about with touch screens, that's no better than putting your phone in your lap & messing with it.

Voice control is definitely the one thing I've never yearned for in any vehicle. I don't know what the latest systems are like but the one in my car is so dreadfully slow and dim-witted that it takes ages to do whatever will take literally 1.5 seconds to do by pressing a button or turning a dial. It certainly is no Alexa. I can only imagine the system in the mk3 Mondeo is even worse!

So don't use it - thankfully with BMW you can still control the entire thing from the controller.

I don't, the problem is others do when they get in her car so when I get it its got "finger gunk" on it and it triggers my OCD
Seemingly because its there and its touchscreen passnegers now seem to think its fine for them to use it, they dont go for the controller, even though thats just as accessible, its bizarre

It seems to be pretty much the same system as the one in the MK4, or at least the one in the father in laws 12 plate, even the voice is identical.

And yes it takes a second or two to respond but I feel it's preferable to have it take a second or two for the heater setting to change from 21c to 16c than it is to have to look away from the road or take a hand off the wheel. The worst one is trying to find someone's number to call when you can just ask it to dial someone and never have to even glance at a screen.

My Megane has both touchscreen and a joystick for controlling the screen. I like touchscreen for when I'm not moving as it's much faster to navigate through the menu but when I'm moving the joystick is perfectly fine also, I'd hateit if my car was touchscreen only.

Was having a discussion with my father about touchscreens in cars just last week and I was reminded that I had read that Mazda is getting rid of them:
https://www.motoringresearch.com/car-news/mazda-getting-rid-of-touchscreens-cars/
I think Scania May follow suit, chatting to a mate of mine at the local dealer apparently they are having a much higher than expected failure rate - of the touch screens- , be it through fault or driver vandalism he didn’t say! :D

Surely if faffing about on your smartphone is illegal then faffing with a touchscreen should be equally so anyway???

The curious thing is they have no legislated on the user interface mechanism, given there have been (largely unfollowed?) objective NHTSA touch guidelines since 2002,
given the litigious nature of USA customers, I wonder if Mazda and maybe others would rather not have the liability when things go wrong;
(like the re-branding of Elon's autopilot ?)
safety/family conscious customers would also be swayed if one cars (mazda) intereface met an unofficial standard, versus another (similar to red tractor, rspca rearing standards)

That's what that annoying disclaimer is for when you open the satnav :p

You aren't supposed to fiddle with it while driving. If they make it law like it is for phone use, some people won't even be legally allowed to turn up the AC/heating and could be fined if a cop sees them. I hope they do because it will stop manufacturers putting it there! :D

some of Elon's acolytes did'nt read those instructions .... or , were just experimenting with the boundaries of the technology.

If you have a system that simply activates Siri or Google like my car, then it works well, but if its anything like the integrated system in my other half's Focus, its a mess. You can't just say call ***

You have to say phone, dial name, then the persons name. If you get that far without it mishearing or simply cancelling then you deserve a pat on the back.

Yea I had a Fiesta ST-2 with the Ford "sync" system for a while. It was great for selecting music tracks when you have a USB stick with 100s of mp3s on it. But everything else it was quicker to just press buttons.
