The I bought an E92 M3 thread..

Forget 300bhp, go for an MX5 and super/turbo charge it.

10k though? yes you could get a Mk3 or 3.5 for under 10 but getting a good 300 out of it along with some mods for the suspension wont be cheep.

I was thinking of a supercharger kit for my mk4 but even it on a new car only see's what?? 250.. ok it weighs sod all and will go like hell but its no cheep.

You don't need 300 with such a low weight though.

E46 M3 is 215bhp per tonne.

You can add a stage 1 turbo to an MX5 NC from BBR for £5k which will give you 262bhp which is 236bp per tonne.

There are many options with the MX5 for adding forced induction, there's something available for pretty much all budgets.

It's an old 3 series. It's years from being a classic.
Disagree there , it’s very much a classic, clean low mileage examples aren’t climbing in value rapidly for any other reason than they are already very much a classic and - good ones - highly sought after.

Yeah i agree, heck i am on 180bhp per ton with just my mk4 and some basic mods.
My s14a was something dippy like 370BHP per ton as it didnt weigh a massive amount either - really when boost came in it was proper squirmy.

I had a 330d coupe and with a remap it would have put down close to the OPs needs along with a mountain of torque but its as far aware from a sports car as you could get, ie boring.

Well sorted MX-5 mk1s with supercharger/turbo mods are pretty sought after.

It's one of the rare instances where a mod can add value :D

Found an E46 M3, 88000 Miles, really good condition, £10250... Not a bad price that going off what others are up for!
