It was a huge relief when Michael Pregent (US advisor) speculated that the attack may have been a token retaliation, deliberately avoiding the US sections of the bases, and again when it was confirmed that nothing had hit anything American by accident.

Thats a stretch... sure they gave advance warning etc.. but they still hit stuff - more reliant on the US getting their heads down and the attack being somewhat limited and expected.

Well, that seems at odds with expert opinion.

Really?

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/08/politics/satellite-images-iran-missile-trnd/index.html

Helicopters seen in the image indicate that the strikes by Iran may have hit a portion of the base used by the US military, said Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California.

That doesn't seem to indicate that they've deliberately avoided US sections of the base at all, quite the opposite.

You could perhaps elaborate a bit?

@Yadda Well it doesn't seem to stand up to what has been reported - you can scroll the before and after photos and see for yourself here:

As RoboCod said:

They destroyed a US helicopter and damaged an MQ1C?

It certainly seems like US equipment was destroyed - yes it does seem to be a symbolic attack but saying the avoided the US parts of the base doesn't seem to be true.

Well I suppose it's possible that the yanks are playing it down, but why would they?

Remember last night when you thought it was game on?

No chance he's backing down now... expect more than the 52 targets too now... like it's clearly been heightened rather quickly. Gonna be a rather target rich environment if they're silly enough to get their airforce involved - feel sorry for the Iranian pilots if they do have to fight... they don't stand much chance.

Those B52s that moved across to Diego Garcia might get to see some action now!

Why do you think it didn't kick off?

Why would they indeed - doesn't seem like they are - there isn't much to play down tbh...

Why do you think it didn't kick off?

Because no Americans were killed and beyond some equipment damage it seems to have been more of a symbolic attack for domestic consumption. That comment you quoted was based on " if they're silly enough to get their airforce involved" see posts it is in response to - the quoted one and the one above it. For obvious reasons, if they had gotten their airforce involved then the USAF would have been involved pretty quickly too.

Oh they are.

Multiple administration officials told CNN that Iran could have directed their missiles to hit areas that are populated by Americans, but intentionally did not.

If US areas weren't deliberately avoided then Trump's admin have been BSing the media into thinking they were. That's actually very interesting in itself.

You're getting a bit muddled - not targeting accommodation etc.. is not the same thing as "deliberately avoiding the US sections of the bases"

For example if someone had targeted the Basra military enclave at the APOD back in the day but only hit hangers etc.. (which were in a separate area to the areas housing troops in tented and corimec accommodation) then it would be accurate to comment on them not hitting the populated bits etc.. it wouldn't be accurate to say that the British military enclave wasn't targeted...

That didn't seem to factor into your decision making last night?

???

I don't think we really know whether the fact that mostly incidental stuff was hit was intentional or happy chance anyhow.

It's interesting that a "top US General's" opinion differs from what some of Trump's administration have been saying.

Top US general says Iran tried to kill US troops as some administration officials believe they purposely missed

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/08/politics/trump-iran-retaliation-missile-attacks/index.html

Either way, it's a good job it didn't kick off like dowie thought it was going to.

The US didnt even bother intercepting any and they could have done easily with those patriot systems. They knew it was going to be pathetic.

The US isnt going to care about one chopper, they have 1000s of them.
