What card would you recommend, please?

I have a fairly old PC, i7 4770K with 16GB of ram in a Z97 motherboard. I want to play games at a decent setting on my 2560 x 1440 monitor. What graphics card should I be looking at that will be compatible with my system?

No particular budget, but I am looking at the sweet spot rather than extremes.
I have a radeon rx460

FPS shooters, like RUST.
High. Doesn't need to be ultra.

Well we have ~ similar systems ... I was running a 970 which worked fine on things but I just wanted more eye candy ... and just got a 5700 (not installed yet) so will be seeing how this works. I had a chance to test one previously (but had to return due to a bad card). And it basically doubled my timespy score. Im running my 2700k at 4.4 btw.
And plan to run at 1440p with most things.

For me I first look at price - what do I want to spend, then decided amd or nvda then on model ... So figure out what you want to spend and I see you dont want overkill but hey you might want to play something in the future that you need some umph for right? ...
Maybe you want something cheap like the new 5600 xt or 5500xt or the 2060 basic or the 1660ti etc ... again depends on cost. If I were shooting for a 5600xt btw (just released) Id shoot for a 5700 only spend a bit more and youll get more much IMO for your money.

Or the 2060 basic could suit you.

Depending on your budget I think either the 5700xt or a 2070 super are good cards for 1440p though you might not need that much if your monitor is only 60hz.

normal 2070 if they are still priced same as 2060 super. otherwise 2070 super or 5700.

Just pick whatever fits your budget, and check if going up to the next card makes sense for you, I dont really see the point in buying anything slower than the 2060S at this point.

2060S is ~300
2070S is ~500
2080S is ~700

Or if you want to fiddle with your GPU by flashing XT bions on it

But given the small price difference of £25 get the XT.

At that price £350 the 2060S is must slower than the XT and the 2070S at £450 is 30% more expensive and barely any faster (if at all with the 19.12.2/3 drivers).

Keep in mind 5700 series of cards have had a few troubles with drivers so id advise to research it with drivers in mind, the 5xxx threads here you could look at and ask questions in.

Welcome. Just a rule of thumb. Stay away from the Evoke model. Is the one with the highest number of posts people reporting issues.
Don't use splitter power cables. Use latest DDU on windows safe mode to wipe out current drivers before install the new card and use 19.12.3 drivers.

Dips to 50 fps in one or two games, most of the time he has a solid 60fps or higher.

Slight changes to settings would bring him better FPS.

Are you seriously trying to claim that 50fps is unplayable? If you are you're grossly exaggerating.
