Indestructible brake pads/disk

As a mechanic it's scary how quick some people go through brakes. In 12 years I have never worn a set of pads out on a car, it's amazing what a bit of engine braking and reading the road ahead can do :D

I put 60k miles on a VW Bora from almost new and that was still on the original front pads and discs when I traded it in. It was regularly doing 250 mile motorway trips.

I use my gears/engine but I have a cousin who went through discs and pads on his cars esp. a Vauxhall Carlton (back in 90's) like crazy.

He would be doing 70-80mph on a dual carriable way (bypass) and I could see him put car in neutral and coast towards the roundabout (slightly downhill) and then hammer on the brakes all the way (I think this is actually illegal), I tried to tell him the car is trying to run away from him, to use the gears and he said no I will blow the engine up doing that.

Yeah coasting in neutral must be illegal
I remember carltons
Big old lumps
My mate had one was never done fixing something on it
I preffered my old cavalier

My grandfather hasn't changed disk or pads either on his old Merc - and that's over 20 years.
Certainly getting his moneys worth out of those

Coasting in neutral isn't specifically illegal. However, if you had an accident while you were coasting in neutral, then you could be prosecuted for not being in full control of the vehicle.

Coasting in neutral still uses fuel, you need to "coast" in gear for free travel :D

Only if it's fuel injected. Pre 90s carb cars would still burn fuel either way...

Probably applies to the majority of cars these days then :p

Amazing how many people you see on motorways etc, on their brakes every 10 seconds because they're 6ft behind the car in front, these people must get through brakes.

If you were in gear the car will slow down more so than in neutral due to the gearbox/engine acting as brake so not really coasting, you are in control of the car.
