Anyone been to a Van Auction?

I don’t think you get cheap vans like you do with cheap cars, they are always the first thing any small or home business needs to get started. My Dad had to go down the salvage route.
You do, as that's the first thing they sell when they need to pay debts.

Just have to catch the bargain before its gone

Been to a few Van & HGV auctions, don't disregard a non rusty Sprinter (the non rusty bit is important) mate of mine is rocking an 05 plate 308 CDi 2.2 which he paid £2k for back in 2015 - at an auction - , it now has just shy of 700k on the clock and it drives very very well, the trick with them is buy one thats battered, not rusty, his looks like its been vandalised from the inside out but mechanically its spot on.

A weekend tidying up the numerous outward pointing dents and it would look fantastic but have a price to reflect this....

Merc trucks are dire these days unfortunately, but, their vans are very good imo.

Certainly get you looking at Relays though, theres a reason they are commonly used as ambulances and it isn't because they are relatively cheap, let down by stereotypical French electrics alas (although not ex ambulances as I believe they have extensive re-work of the electrics during conversion which kind of makes sense)

I’d rather have a rag and bone cart and push it myself, than own any french van or car :D
Despite the above, Amen. :D

Transits vivaros transporters and Vitos in our fleet

Best of the bunch by a country mile is the Vitoa

Bu far and away a cut above everything else above

The vivaros are crap driving and like a bean tin but reliable

the new mk8 transits are a match for everything else quality wise the 9 seaters are a gnats chuff away from a v class in terms of fit and finish but about as reliable as Chinese Coronavirus reports

the transport is a good middle ground but way overpriced for what it is

Vito there’s a reason merc stick them out the door with an unlimited mileage warranty they work

100k on the clock and 14k less vat

I second the sprinter, there's a reason every thrifty punjabi trader keeps them like family and it ain't just the merc badge.

I still haven't figured out the overhead light controls on the new model mind :( none of the buttons seems to work in an intuitive way. The older ones we have that have been run hard seem to develop a problem with going into second gear IIRC but other than that take a beating.

It’s a commercial vehicle, 100k at ~3 years old is pretty low mileage tbh (My 17 plate Scania is way over 200k miles) I wouldn’t wince at a Sprinter with three times the mile - they are built to do huge mileages and will.

NVP’s point about market traders having them is very true.

Very true, used to drive a 312cdi back in the day, it had done moon miles even though only a few years old and wouldn’t go into second so you just went 1st to 3rd, the engine had enough low down torque to manage it with ease.

My then boss had remapped it to help with fuel consumption but this had the opposite effect, it went like stink if you hoofed it, the killjoy eventually had it speed limited after a few of us were caught speeding in it (myself included) but it’s range was epic.

From what I hear it is a simple problem with something rusting up a little and an easy fix but I only log issues and that is it don't really have anything to do with the actual maintenance side.

I had the same problem a few years back.
Very few dedicated van sales places to look around a few different models, and most vans were high mileage and overpriced considering the state of some of them.
By the time you've factored in an unexpected repair and recon injectors for any VW nearing 100k then you might as well buy nearly new from a dealer.

I ended up with a 12 month old lwb Vito from Intercounty instead of a 7-8 year old used van bought privately. Yes it's more money but for a long term reliable business purchase it makes sense.

It's also a very nice van to drive.

Probably got quite a price premium due to the low (for one of those) miles, and this caught my eye...

Other than the usual wear this van is in excellent condition

Usual wear? At less than 50k? I’d expect it to be showing virtually no wear at that age and mileage - our service van at work (a VW) is a similar age, circa 100k but still smells new inside and looks it despite the mechanics using it!
