Same thing happened when CIV5 was released, it was compared to the fully fleshed out CIV4 with 3(?) expansions while completely forgetting CIV4 has a similar amount of content that 5 had when it was released.

It’s pretty much how this franchise has worked since it started. Base game is released with about half the content of the ‘final version’ and its fleshed out with a couple of expansions.
I even enjoyed playing the beyond Earth game but wingers really winged about that one so it didn’t get as much love from the developer.

) and Civ3. I remember when Civ4 came along and that was considered at the time to be a bit of a dumbing down, with the day-glo graphics and pretty animations; and that is now considered by some to be a high-point of the series.
