Only X570 and B550 motherboards will support Zen 3 CPU's

Good amount of detail in the announcement - looking forward to see if there's any pcie bifurcatiin support at all on B550 (guess no, but you never know!)

Don't think you can take a blog post from 8 months ago as gospel. At the same time, I hope they meant it.
Pretty sure you can as the reason for non support given by Robert hallock is the bios size and all the max boards come with the larger 32mb bios chip to offer full support going forward which was the main selling point of the max line up.

The MSI max boards will support zen 3.

e) You want a value-oriented motherboard that’ll support not only the latest AMD releases but will also have you covered for all future AM4 product releases.

PCIe 4.0 was cut off with b450 and x470 boards via AMD. They can do this again .
AMD have caught up with Intel, whilst not making huge profits, they had to do it this way for marketshare. Now they can DO BOTH , and still be cheaper then intel !

Good on AMD (business point of view ) , such as shame to people I've spec'd b450 +3600 saying they can slap Zen 3 in a few years time.

Out goes my x470 Master :(

PCIe4 being cut didn't cost amd CPU sales though and when you think about it the people on the older boards with a 2600 or a 1700x are the ones more likely to be upgrading over an x570 owner with a 3900x.

It would look very bad on AMD if they stepped in and forced vendors not to support zen 3 when a bios update was all that's needed.

Oh dear. So many people thought it was a good idea to buy a B450 Tomahawk Max over an X570... I argued it wasn't due to PCI-E 4 support.

I know if I had bought one I'd be furious right now. Only upgraded a month ago.

X470 buyers, how does it feel buying two mobos? Lol, sorry, quite sure I said it was a bad idea.

Meh. I'll lob a secondhand 3950X in mine. Expect we'll see a few of those on the market when the new chips launch. Bought it before X570 existed anyway.

Given my current financial situation, I think I'm stuck with my 2700X for the foreseeable future...

Not really, they did that to thread ripper and TR4 was meant to be supported to 2020 ... No difference .
Guessing 12/16 core Zen2 will have a good second hand market .

Cutting PCIe didn't cut sales, it increased it due to AMD making x570 in house ! Or people still buying b450 and x570 over intel .
B550 and b450 will still sell loads along with Ryzen 2000 and 3000 and 4000.

Specially when Toma is over £120 and x570 UD is £150...

For someone who is considering an upgrade to Zen, this is a worry. If I'm correct even 570 is on its last legs as it will be a 1gen mobo if bought now?

Eh?

No 570 will be fine, it has support for 3000 and 4000 series (as well as 2000 and possibly even 1000 series processors) - so at least 2 gens, if not 4 :)

If a 670 series is released to go with 4000 series processors, then even that will be a 2 gen platform (3000 and 4000 series), although it will be the most limited in that there will be no "upgrade" generations.

Should have qualified..
If I bought a 570 or a 670 mobo and slapped a 4000 series in it, then it would be a 1 gen mobo for me as I'm coming so late to Zen? I'm currently x79 so this upgrade will be a complete swap out.
I might just get a gfx card and make that tide me over until AM5, or see what Intel do.

Well I'm going to sit tight & wait for confirmation of this on the B450 Tomahawk max support page. If it doesn't, heigh ho, I'll slap a used 3700x in there & relegate it to my everyday PC, I feel that the 5675c that I'm using for my everyday pc right now wont be cutting it for what I want to do in the future, I'm starting to dabble in video editing again.

Threadripper probably accounts for less than 1% of CPU sales and was moved on to a different socket with more pins for the increased power delivery needed for 64 cores but according to Robert hallock zen 3 isn't being supported due to bios sizes and the max line up have double the size of even some x570.

It probably did increase sales but most people buying X570 would have regardless of this. The opposite will be true for CPU sales on zen 3 with many users opting to stick with what they have, pick up a second hand zen 2 or jumping to Intel rather than buying a new board with only one CPU upgrade available at a time when Intel are offering atleast 2.

Regardless of all this I'm pretty sure I will be able to use zen 3 on the tomahawk max whether it be through msi officially or from the modding community.

this could backfire on amd just as it did with intel. if you force someone into a mobo replacement then all options are on the table. and when intel start making something decent those on amds 400 series chipset and below may just jump back over to the blue side.
