Regardless the dates remain the same, wishful thinking and picking the "facts" that suit seem to predominate ;) Seems to indicate why they held B550 for so long, maybe a technical reason for it, maybe not. I still think AMD users have had a very good run considering Intel would sell you $350 quad cores just three years ago with a new motherboard to go with it.

AMD have changed the game, massive increases in what is available, SMT in the whole range, overclocking, lots of PCIE lanes and all for a lot less than Intel. I'll always take more for free but I can't really complain about what they've done for the market.
 
What AMD should have done is to say due to limited bios space on many older Ryzen motherboards, we can only offer Ryzen 4000 support for boards with a 32MB bios chip.
That would have made far more sense than simply locking all pre B550/X570 owners out.
 
Pretty miffed that my MSI Mortar non-max will not support the upcoming Ryzen 4000 chips. I realise AMD said they were keeping the same socket, but requiring a new motherboard has the same outcome.

There's x570 boards with a 16 megabyte bios
 
Also what's the point of B550 boards so late in the game? As soon as Zen 3 rolls up surely we will have B650 boards (assuming they are not a year late). So even if someone was to buy a new board for the purpose of zen 3 you would be better off waiting.

Supposedly there will be a zen 2+ refresh in June (Not sure if there are any legs to this rumour) skip to the 8 min mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJU4RFs3Dp8), apprently it will only work on 500 chipsets. If this is true it would make sense why they even bothered to roll this out so late.
 
AMD has provided us will a full list of motherboard compatibility charts for all of the AM4 processors aligned with all of the AM4 motherboards. Due to technical limitations around BIOS size (i.e. motherboard vendors using too small of BIOS chips), only various families of hardware are verified in different motherboards. Most motherboards will likely accept processors outside these designations, especially if the vendor has used a larger BIOS chip, however AMD is putting these guidelines in to make it easier to follow.

Interesting comment from Dr. Ian Cutress, suggesting we'll probably see Zen 3 support added to some older boards "unofficially" anyway.
 
I also forgot,didn't AMD do the same for X399 owners?

I am sensing a trend here. Have they been talking to Intel marketing for tips??

Balls, I was hoping to drop in a 4000 chip on my Asus prime pro x470 (has a 32mb bios chip), if it doesn't happen its no real hardship I guess as next thing to upgrade will be GPU and then I guess I will rebuild again when zen 4 arrives
 
My guess is AMD want to shift some more X570 and the new B550 which comes late in the day and is a more expensive B450 with PCIe gen 4 added that most people dont need or won't use and so to encourage people to buy these they are now saying zen 3 wont be supported on older boards in the hope that people ditch their old boards and buy a new board with only one new gen of CPU available then once the Zen 3 chips arrive they will add support for all the previous chipsets so not to lose out on CPU sales.

The bottom line is that the B450 has been so much of a success and has hampered X570 sales and would likely do the same with B550 especially with only the basic boards starting at £100 while the top end B450s are around this price and perfectly capable of running up to the 16 core CPUs.
 
It seems AMD originally had told that German OEM,who said B450 should work,that it would be fine. The OEM had to find out from the official news release,that it didn't work!

AMD told Hardware Unboxed that Zen 3 would NOT work on 400 series motherboards because they will not be supplying them with any Zen 3 Microcode for the 400 series chipset.

What I don't get,is they told a system integrator it would work....a system integrator. How many of them did they promise it would work?? Then those companies were oblivious until AMD made a news statement. How can they expect better relationships with system integrators,if they pull stunts like this??

If Intel and Nvidia tell them exactly what is happening,and they can plan better,no wonder those companies still get a good percentage of prebuilt systems.

I believe them when they say its about the size of the ROM chips.......

What they probably didn't know is some vendors like MSI refreshed their 400 series board with much larger ROM chips, the same size you find on X570.... but do now as someone pointed that out to them, MSI may well be saying to AMD "hang on a minute, we refreshed our boards to give our customers support for Zen 3" and now AMD have egg on thier face because they don't know what's going on with their own partners.......

Perhaps those who refreshed their boards with larger ROM chips will now get Zen 3 microcode for 400 series chipsets?
 
So much for being able to have one board (Say an X370 Crosshair) and keeping it through the entire AM4 cycle. Pretty sure that's what people were touting originally.

Personally, I'm not too fussed, if the Ryzen 4XXX proves to be a worthy upgrade I'll put one in my Asus Strix X570, if not I'll upgrade with a new motherboard in 2022 when I'm in my new house then.

I will find all the mental gymnastics funny though as people defend AMD etc.
