Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Yeah but the workbench will be useful for other things, and paired with a jigsaw (below), should be plenty for Raymond's needs. Even then, it won't hurt to learn to saw with a handsaw, if you're taking on a huge project or are a pro then obviously the power tools are worth it, but for the bonsai tree potting bench, the hand sawing required is not exactly the end of the world.

The mitre saw seems a bit overkill

I suspect down the line I will have both, I could buy both now today. It's not so much about the cost as these things will lasts and I have no problem spending money on quality products that lasts.

I still have an entire house to renovate so everything I buy will be used down the line I expect. I have now ordered the wood, which has a 2 weeks wait for delivery, so I will sleep on it between now and then and see what power tools I get or not...

I have worked out that I will need to make 36 cuts in total for the table, most of that being the decking planks.

36 cuts by hand or 36 cuts by mitre saw.....

I don't know why but I have just never bought myself a mitre saw, track saw or circular saw. I could really do with a mitre saw and have been looking at some recently. I am very neat with cutting by hand now with all the practice, and I often touch the cut ends against my disc sander which you can use to remove all imperfections (providing you have extra length to play with). When I laid my wood floor, I did all the cuts by hand too, I should have bought a mitre saw then :D

I made the table for my disc sander, with the disc sander :D

when the electrician did a cable conduit in a wall - I asked him and he said using a chisel and hammer is less mess and damage for just an inch wide by less than an inch depth for about 3m in block.

I've seen both and the chase is quicker, neater and definitely specified on all my projects! Particularly when there is old flint render in one of the walls to contend with. Hand just doesn't make an impression (tried) and even kango drill skids around. The sparky chased the walls with his chaser, so I'm hoping to do the same for my network cabling

Anything you want a 90deg or other decent angle.. that's more than you think in a house:
* windows
* doors and frames
* shelves (including in-cupboard)
* skirting board
* coving
* floorboards
* decking
* kitchen worktops..

I would say could use it as a brick/block saw.. but that's pushing it I suspect!

I suspect it probably is but I have to admit it was very neat.

Always makes me laugh though... what's possibly the more dangerous and terrifying tool on the site... the anglegrinder with a cutting blade. How can we make it more terrifying? lots of blades :D

Tomorrow I'll be taking a little 115mm diamond blade to some tiling that's already in situ for a concealed shower valve. I've diamond cut tiles on the tile saw but never in situ.. should be ... interesting.

for goodness sake wear PPE - especially goggles. There has been a surge in eye-injuries as people take to DIY during lockdown without thinking things through.

Or I could go balls to the wall and spend £150 on an Evolution Mitre Saw and cut the wood on the ground?

Yes, or given your bad back you could get both and put the mitre saw on the table.
If you are cutting long lengths a mitre saw table would be a better option for the saw.
Aldi have a decentish one for £40
Get all 3 they will come in handy if you have a whole house to refurbish.

yup I have all three covered.

this would be normal diy.. i happen to be wfh so no time except the w/e for it.

Cuts made - just waiting on the bathroom dust level to drop after cutting a deep (though plasterboard) cut in the centre to open it. Although I have a respirator mask, glasses and inner and outer ear protectors.. I think it's prudent not to load mask filters more than they need.

I measured 4 times and remeasured after putting masking tape on. The diamond blade went through the tile like butter - no cracks as far as I could see either.

The position and having the bath edge near meant I could use my knee to steady the cuts.

Impressed - was this blade: https://www.toolstation.com/abracs-tile-porcelain-diamond-blade/p87878

Amazon have this deal quite often. I've got the same one and pretty happy all in all although I've not much experience with its competition tbf.
The only thing I really don't like is that the chuck regularly works lose and I have actually lost a couple of bits that have fallen out when I've been working outdoors.
Good battery life, quick charging and a nice range of other tools that use the same battery system.

This was my post in relation to my Bosch PSB 18LI with my only real gripe being that the drill bit will often work loose no matter how much I tighten the chuck.
Anyway I stumbled on this video the other day where they say that what you do it to tighten the chuck but then rotate it back and you will feel it click into place which is where it actually locks the chuck. I'd never heard about this before and although I've yet to test it in anger I definitely get the click that they describe. Probably old old info for you wise peeps but was news to me and still thought it worth a post. :)

Here's the vid with a bit more detail...

Should do. I have the same drill. This is the full range of kit you can use with the same battery. I managed to get hold of the strimmer with an extra battery and charger for 10 quid from gumtree a couple of years ago. Pretty chuffed with that tbh!

Oh and seeing as you have the same drill as me make sure you check my post above yours for a handy tip! (that everyone apart from me probably already knew)

edit- that wickes deal ain't the best - cheaper even on Bosch's own website.

Am in the market for a circular saw. Looking at the following from screw fix

https://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dcs391-165mm-18v-li-ion-xr-cordless-circular-saw-bare/23296

whilst ive decided on the saw im interested to know if you all would spend the extra to
Get the carry case for it. With the t stack box its more like £150 And also it isnt available from screwfix

https://www.powertoolworld.co.uk/dewalt-dcs391nt-xr-165mm-circular-saw-body-only-in-tstak-vi-case

i dont use this sort of tool outside of the home so the thought of having another huge case around irks me but at the same
Time i Look after my tools and like to keep all the “bits” together. All my Power tools are stores indoors in “dads cubbord” so no one goes in there but me.

in a rather round about way I'm asking is the extra £40 for the case worth it!

I wouldn’t always get a case for something like a saw, so much easier to store and transport. Drills I don’t bother with as they stand up on their own but saws are weird shapes

I would but then I don’t like all my tools out and about. Circular saws look messy because of the shape, once you get a few blades etc you’ll want to keep them all together.

Have you checked you can’t get the box separate for less? It wouldn’t come I’m with an insert mind (does that one linked?).

I’d also consider getting one because you can put a little lock on it for piece of mind, especially if they are in an unlocked cupboard. While you say only you go in, there are way too many horror stories out there. It’s so easy to get into trouble with one of those and they are incredibly dangerous tools.

most tools are cordless so i just keep the batteries separate. The corded tools are mostly big heavy duty stuff like my sds drill which the kids couldn't get out Even if they wanted too.

i get your point tho. It may be a good idea in the future to add a keyed lock to the cubbord.

the boxes are £40 the one from powertool world just comes with a cut foam insert. Screwfix do sell a tstack box separate but ill let you guess how much it is (also no insert)

i think ill buy the tool and just a sturdy box from b+q etc.

Yeah. Check EBay and the likes of Powertoolmate/MyToolShed.

I’m sure I only paid about that including the case for mine.

EDIT. Ah no. Looks like they’ve jumped in price. I’m sure when I got mine the ones in a case weren’t much more than the bare tool.
