Hi all,

I've recently got myself a new monitor - 1440p gaming, however I feel my trusty 1660ti struggles a bit, fine at 1080p but at 1440p it isn't as smooth.

I have a Ryzen 2600 CPU, would getting a 2070 super be too much for my CPU?

Any advise appreciated. :)

A 2070 super or a 5700xt would be a good match for your CPU, especially at 1440p were the CPU matters less than at 1080p. Or you could wait until later in the year for new Nvidia and AMD cards.

definitely wait and save up a bit more for next gen cards, and hey if they don't launch this year, its best to wait as next gen stuff is always better and with next gen NVIDIA/AMD its looking very good gpu wise :)

Thanks guys - hadnt considered AMD, seems quite a bit cheaper than the 2070 super with nearly the same performance. People mention driver issues is this really that big a deal?

I would say I have had no problems at all using drivers on my 5700XT or my RX570. Over all stable for me and reliable.

5700 and the XT are great cards tbh, owned a couple of them. Also you have the option of running stuff on Medium until the new cards drop, card should handle that ok. 5700XT is a good solid card though if you can manage to get a good price for yours :)

If they don't launch this year then that's what 9 months plus of waiting whilst playing 1440p with a card designed for 1080p.

I think I'd rather upgrade now tbh.

Alao the 3600 and 3600x can be had for £140 ish. It's would be worthwhile selling your current cpu you will likely get around £100 for it on ebay and then buy one of the above for £40. The performance gain for the money is massive.

Watch out for being too pro AMD! ;) @TNA

Absolutely not I love the green as much as the red. Just saying in my case ive had no problems driver wise. I did however have my Powercolor Red Devil just randomly die on me and had to suffer a month of being without. Happily though ocuk sorted me a new one and touch wood no problems.

I am same as you, there seem to be a couple of dudes on here that if you be positive about your AMD experience then you are a fanboy. :s

I have had two AMD and one nvidia card in the past six years and not had driver problems with any card. In fact you can extend that to 20+ years, I have had two cards rma faulty over that period and have sold aging cards on the bay way past their warranty still working.

Thanks all, one thing that's making me hesitate a little is missing out on ray tracing, it seems to be the next big thing, and from what I can gather AMD doesn't support? Although the price different between the 5700xt & 2070 super is pretty big..

5700XT and 2070S are not massive jumps from a 1660ti.. I would wait a couple months for a 3070/Navi equivalent (2080ti performance). 1660ti shouldnt be that bad on 1440p, just turn settings to high instead of max, its quite similar to my v56 which has no problems at 1440p.

Ray tracing shouldnt be a concern with the 2000 series as they are too weak to run any proper raytracing games that'll come with the 3000 series.

Sorry, but the 2070S is decidedly better at 1440p. Almost double the FPS in many games.

Its ~ £400 for the AMD card, then ~ £530 for the nvidia card (trying to take in a low ball card on this site). So your paying 25% more for the 'double' fps in games. At a glance it does look faster, but in some games @ 1440p I can see them being very close.

I think you’ve got the ring end of the stick. I was referring to greatash saying the 2070S is not a big jump from the 1660Ti. I wasn’t comparing it to a 5700XT. I know full well there’s a whisker between those cards.

Just updated to the cheapest in them ranges but its not a dig mate, im saying if I were buying a 1440p card considering your gonna save over a ton, I would get the AMD for the time being. I would certainly not buy the nvidia for the ray tracing as like some have mentioned - its the next series that will improve on this (30x0). If you dont have to buy now just wait.

I agree there, but I got my GB 2070S last year for £490, and that hurt a bit. No way I’d be paying 600 notes now. I know it’s a difficult time, but those prices take the absolute ****

That price is where it should be at, and of the two is the better card. Somewhere along the line getting the 1660Ti was the mistake, but its not that bad as you could sell this then get the next card to suit the monitor.
